Your new role

The principal function of this position is to lead and oversee electrical design activities within the team as directed by the Head of T&D and to assist in the development of the Group’s capabilities in the field of HV/EHV Engineering. The role will include taking a senior role in project work, focused on production and client liaison, mentoring, and coaching junior members of the team. It involves meetings with clients, contractors, and other designers, site visits to non‑UK design offices, and responsibility for Work Package Design Management, including all reporting to satisfy the company’s design management requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead role for one of the key electrical disciplines: Primary, Secondary, OH, or Cable design of HV and EHV Substations in compliance with relevant BS, IEC, and customer-specified standards.
  • Coordinate design of substation and/or overhead/cable design from concept to detailed design as per client requirements.
  • Manage multidisciplinary design activities.
  • Liaise with other members of the design team and client engineers.
  • Provide technical management of junior engineers and CAD draught professionals.
  • Calculate loading and short‑circuit values of primary plant.
  • Approve primary engineering design on own projects and for other team members; attend technical meetings with the client to ensure satisfaction.
  • Develop and train junior engineers.

About You

  • HNC / HND / Degree Qualified in Electrical Engineering with experience in the UK Electricity Transmission and Distribution industry; ideally NG authorised.
  • Membership of the IET, Chartered Status, or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience working with or authorisation from major UK utilities such as NG or DNO companies; proficient understanding of electricity industry & regulatory standards, policies, and their application.
  • Strong electrical knowledge and experience in equipment design, specification, layout, and detailed engineering of extra and high voltage substations electrical equipment and product range.
  • Good understanding of electrical plant, transformer, protection, relays, and control principles and construction disciplines and current ENA, BS, and IEC electrotechnical engineering standards.
  • Multi-disciplinary design management experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a multi-disciplinary and multi-locational team environment in collaboration with our clients.
