Applications are sought for a 10 PA substantive consultant post in renal medicine. This will include 1-2 PA of SPA time depending upon the role. This consultant job has been created to cover the increasing workload in the department. This is one of two jobs currently been advertised by the unit to have 2 new substantive colleagues, please apply for each job separately if you would like to be considered for both roles.
The successful applicant will be based at the Sussex Kidney Unit (SKU) in the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH) in Brighton and the eastern Sussex area, working for University Hospitals Sussex (UHS). They may also undertake other roles within the catchment area of the Sussex Kidney Unit.
The successful applicant will become part of the consultant team doing general nephrology in the east of our catchment area in our Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit. They also will do speciality clinics depending upon their area of interest and experience, but would be interested in candidates with post‑transplant clinic experience.
They will be responsible for a cohort for haemodialysis patients in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit.
The successful applicant will be involved in renal procedures at the RSCH involving tunneled haemodialysis line or native and transplant biopsies.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as part of the Sussex Kidney Unit and contribute to the development of the unit both within University Hospitals Sussex and the wider nephrology community.
The post holder will be one of twelve full‑time renal consultants based at the Sussex Kidney Unit in Brighton with an office there. The successful applicant will work in Brighton and in the eastern area of our catchment in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit but may also need to travel to do clinics within our whole SKU catchment area.
The successful applicant will form part of the renal consultant team who do outreach general nephrology clinics in the Polegate/Eastbourne renal unit seeing new and follow‑up patients. The standard clinic template would be 8 follow‑up patients (20 minute slots) and 2 new patients (40 minute slots) in each clinic.
Appropriate time is allocated in the job plan for clinic administration and post‑clinic follow up; this represents a clinic of 4 hours with one hour then allocated for clinic administration and 1 hour 30 minutes for follow up between clinic visits. Travel time is also allocated. Clinics will also involve supervising renal NTN trainees managing a clinic alongside the consultant clinics.
Person specification
Experience/ Qualifications
- MRCP or recognised equivalent.
- Basic medical degree.
- Full and specialist registration with GMC or eligibility within six months.
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Renal or within six months if trained in UK.
- Evidence of equivalence to UK CCT for those trained outside the UK, confirmed by GMC.
Clinical Skills and Experience
- Experience managing renal dialysis and sub‑speciality patients.
- Experience in inpatient and outpatient renal nephrology work.
- Ability to perform renal biopsies and haemodialysis lines.
- Evidence of development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
Knowledge
- Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
Organisation and Planning
- Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
- Evidence of managerial skills and achievements or courses attended.
Teaching Skills
- Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
- Recognised teaching qualification.
Academic and Research
- Evidence of participation in audit.
- Prizes and honours.
- Appropriate progression of career to date.
