Job Summary
The General Practitioner specialising in Substance Misuse provides clinical assessment, and treatment for individuals experiencing drug dependency. The GP will support newly referred patients through harm reduction, detoxification, stabilisation, and recovery programmes, ensuring evidence‑based medical treatment.
The role involves working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams including nurses, recovery workers, and pharmacists to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
- Provide comprehensive medical assessments for newly referred individuals from the court or release from custody who require clinical substance misuse concerns
- Diagnose and manage drug dependency
- Initiate and manage opioid substitution therapy (OST) including:
- Methadone
- Buprenorphine (Buvidal)
- Prescribe medication in line with UK clinical guidelines and NICE recommendations
- Monitor patients undergoing medically assisted withdrawal and stabilisation
- Provide harm reduction advice including naloxone distribution and overdose prevention
- Conduct regular patient reviews and medication monitoring
- Order relevant blood tests or other investigations via their GPs
Patient Care & Support
- Deliver patient‑centred care focusing on recovery and rehabilitation
- Develop with the MDT individualised treatment plans
- Work with patients to reduce health risks associated with substance use including:
- Blood borne viruses (HIV, Hepatitis B & C)
- Liver disease
- Mental health conditions
- Promote health education and lifestyle improvements
Multidisciplinary Working
- Work collaboratively with:
- Substance misuse nurses
- Recovery workers
- Psychiatrists
- Pharmacists
- Criminal justice teams
- Participate in case conferences and multidisciplinary meetings
- Provide clinical leadership and guidance to the wider team
Governance & Compliance
- Maintain accurate and confidential electronic medical records
- Ensure compliance with:
- NHS policies
- HIW standards
- Clinical governance frameworks
- Participate in clinical audits and quality improvement initiatives
- Adhere to safeguarding procedures for vulnerable adults and children
Safeguarding
- Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns
- Work with safeguarding teams to protect vulnerable individuals and families
- Escalate concerns in accordance with local safeguarding policies
Training & Professional Development
- Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) in substance misuse medicine
- Stay updated with NICE guidelines and emerging treatments in addiction medicine
Qualifications
- MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical degree
- RCGP Certificate in the Management of Drug Misuse (Part 2)
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Inclusion on the GP Register
- License to practice in the UK
Skills & Experience
- Experience working as a General Practitioner in primary care or community services
- Experience managing substance misuse patients
- Experience prescribing opioid substitution therapy (OST)
