An exciting opportunity to provide high standard care to children and families with Diabetes. The post holder will work collaboratively with and lead a team of Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurses, alongside an experienced paediatric consultant with specialist expertise in Diabetes. An extended multidisciplinary team will also be available for support. The role spans the UHCW and Rugby St Cross sites, with occasional meetings in community settings.

The post holder will develop and deliver expert patient‑centred care based on local and national guidance. Care delivered will include patient assessment, planning and implementation of specialist care, and provision of advice, support and education in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team, including child protection and safeguarding teams.

The post holder will be involved in audit, support a small team, participate in network meetings and provide education to medical and nursing staff within the unit to improve quality and enhance care delivery.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is a clinical expert in paediatric diabetes working autonomously as a member of the multidisciplinary team. Their role is a clinician, educator, researcher, and manager/leader of the paediatric diabetes team. They will provide and develop specialist services and advice and will be able to make informed decisions within the specialist field of diabetes and scope of professional practice to ensure agreed standards and targets are met.

The post holder will work within the paediatric diabetes team based in secondary care and will act as a clinical expert and professional resource to the multi‑professional team, families and patients.

Job responsibilities

  • Coordinate the care of diabetes patients and promote good practice in the diagnosis and management of CYP and their families.
  • Provide advice and expertise on the management of children and young people who are living with a diabetes diagnosis and their families.
  • Deliver specialist advice to manage simple and complex symptoms for CYP, families and staff.
  • Lead child and family‑centred care and establish and maintain a supportive relationship with the child and their family/carers, ensuring that the rights, dignity and confidentiality of the child are protected at all times.
  • Titrate insulin doses and manage complex treatment options such as insulin pump therapy after completing the Diabetes Care CYP Course and Clinical Competencies, and advise clinicians, parents and carers on medication adjustments.
  • Manage nurse‑led clinics and baseline assessments, formulate clinical management plans, conduct specialist investigations, interpret results, initiate appropriate action and participate in multidisciplinary clinics. Provide emergency support to families during crises.
  • Collaborate and share expertise within multidisciplinary teams locally and nationally.
  • Act as a resource in the care of patients’ needs, ensuring an optimum level of service to patients and their families.
  • Work closely with network, other hospital and community staff to ensure an effective seamless service.
  • Communicate effectively to enable comprehensive care planning within the multidisciplinary team.
  • Embed patient and public involvement within specialist nursing practice.
  • Advocate for patients, negotiate the patient journey and ensure optimum care is provided.
  • Adhere to infection control guidelines and procedures.
  • Act as a positive role model and promote an effective team ethos through excellent clinical skills.
  • Promote health and well‑being for CYP and their families with diabetes and maximise opportunities for health education and promotion.
  • Support smooth transition by working closely with children and adult colleagues and teams.
