Position Overview
We are currently seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join our Balearia Ro‑Ro Passenger ferry fleet.
- Deployment: ASAP
- Vessel: HSC RoPax ferry PEPITA CASTELLVI and MERCEDES PINTO
- Duration: 2 months (+/- 1 month)
- Requirements: All valid STCW certifications, including mandatory Ro‑Pax certificates as per STCW Reg. V/2
- Department: Engine
- Location: Shipboard
Position Summary
- Overall responsibility for the entire technical operations and equipment onboard, including engineering, electrical and mechanical divisions.
- Ensuring that all systems and equipment of every subdivision of the technical department are operating correctly and are maintained to the highest possible standards to support safe navigation of the ship, in compliance with company policies, national or international standards, public health and other regulations.
- Ensures proper coordination with different technical parties and cooperation with all ship’s departments.
Reporting Structure
- Reporting to the Captain and to the Company Marine Technical Department.
- Subordinates – Engine department.
Safety Duties
- Participates in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions.
- Must always comply with the company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Leads by example by taking care of health and safety of self and others.
- Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are used correctly; delivers training, guidance and supervision on their use where necessary.
Education / Experience / Qualifications
- Valid STCW95 certification.
- Valid CoC A‑III/2.
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
- Extensive experience as a Chief Engineer is essential.
- Strong ability to detect and identify the cause of machinery faults.
- Physically and medically fit.
- Moral integrity required.
- Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses.
- Alaska experience is a plus.
- Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience.
Language Requirements
Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board, including the ability to give and receive instructions and to engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Computer Knowledge
Good knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft office applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Required to stand, walk long distances, reach and sit. Repetitive motion of bending, climbing stairs and ladders. Lifting or pushing up to 50 lbs. The position requires overtime and irregular schedules. Works in the Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments and an office environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead the safe and effective operation and maintenance of all main, auxiliary, and domestic machinery and technical equipment to the highest possible standards.
- Overall responsible for the safe and efficient operation, repair and maintenance of main engines, diesel generators, propulsion machinery, water treatment systems, boilers, bilge water separators, cooling systems, fuel and lubricant systems, air compressors, fresh water generators, evaporators, reverse osmosis, deck machinery, garbage management, life‑boat and rescue equipment, plastics equipment, fire suppression, cleaning equipment, swimming pool, hotel technical equipment, ventilation, thrusters, stabilizers, steering, and alarms.
- Responsible for the management of the electrical sub‑department.
- Ensures that engine department personnel comply with procedures and safety instructions.
- Manages planned maintenance systems, plant history, and inventory systems.
- Prepares and follows up on departmental budget with the Superintendent.
- Assigns engine‑room watches per VMS and ensures crew composition meets normal and abnormal conditions.
- Maintains compliance with ISM, national, international regulations, flag stage, port state, local and SMS requirements.
- Determines advance needs for voyages, ensures sufficient fuel, water, lubricants and other provisions, controls fuel consumption.
- Knows handling characteristics of the vessel, stopping distance, safety features and detailed knowledge of the company’s VMS.
- Assists the Safety Officer with ship‑safety and engine‑room safety standards.
- Educates the Staff Engineer for succession as Chief Engineer.
- Prepares and issues 'Chief Engineers Standing Orders'.
- Familiar with lifesaving, fire‑fighting and pollution prevention equipment locations.
- Monitors fixed fire‑fighting systems and portable equipment readiness.
- Ensures all engine personnel are trained on engine‑room alarm systems and CO2 alarms.
- Implements safe work practices, trains contractors on OH&S briefs.
- Conducts monthly OHS self‑inspection (form SAF112), oversees PPE inventory, condition and maintenance.
- Participates in shipboard maintenance, health and safety meetings.
- Conducts fuel and ballast operations per company procedures, prevents marine pollution.
- Handles disposal of sludge, bilge water, oily water and exhausted oils per regulations.
- Maintains sufficient stock of spare parts and consumables.
- Ensures machinery certification is updated.
- Conducts continuous survey maintenance per classification society and class authorizations.
- Maintains and updates records, manuals and technical drawings.
- Reports and manages classification society requirements.
- Provides technical information during inspections.
- Supports on‑board operational plans, collaborates with Hotel Department to minimise operational impact.
- Keeps the Master informed of significant problems.
- Develops emergency and damage‑control plans.
- Notifies Captain of vessel readiness before departures.
- Attends arrival and departure manoeuvres.
- Cooperates with the stability officer.
- Submits required reports to Marine Technical department.
- Communicates with Staff Engineer to prioritise work.
- Maintains accurate engine log books, technical and waste‑related logs.
- Ensures personnel hold correct certifications.
- Liaises with HR for personnel issues.
- Maintains corrective action system and disciplinary procedures.
- Controls department overtime and working hours, ensures compliance with ILO/MLC, completes documentation.
- Implements strict procedural compliance with ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, COLREG, GMDSS, STCW, Oil Record Book, ILO/IMO/ITF/MLC 2006, ballast water management, US CDC program, stability, Bahamas shipping legislation.
- Ensures accordance with company policies, evaluates performance, maintains open culture of trust.
