This role is a Band 5 Staff Nurse position in our critical care unit, which supports a major trauma centre with specialized areas such as Cardiac ICU, Neuro ICU and General ICU. The role provides structured support, a career pathway, induction training and an in‑house Foundation programme, with opportunities to undertake an adult critical care course at degree or masters level.
As a Band 5 Staff Nurse you will deliver high‑standard individualised patient care, work in highly pressurised situations, collaborate with an established team, and develop your critical care skills in a complex environment.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
What you’ll do
- Act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct at all times.
- Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of standards of care, using Fundamentals of Care as a framework, ensuring that corporate and nursing objectives are achieved.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care, providing support to other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Act as team leader in the supervision of the professional work of nursing staff at Band 5 and below, exercising good leadership and control.
- Take charge of the unit on a regular basis.
- Liaise with patients and their relatives, ensuring they are kept informed of treatment and progress and providing advice and support.
- Adopt a pro‑active role in meeting the Clinical Governance agenda for Critical Care.
- Promote evidence‑based practice and participate actively in any relevant research or audits being undertaken.
- Discuss clinical developments with the Matron and Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and assist in implementing changes that benefit the standards of care for patients.
- Inform the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse of any complaints or adverse events, reporting on actions taken in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Infection Control standards, in line with Trust policy.
- Organise reception of patients and visitors in accordance with recognised procedures.
- Ensure patients and relatives have access to medical staff to discuss treatment and progress.
- Arrange the care of patient property with their permission, in accordance with policies and hospital responsibilities.
- Maintain good liaison with other nursing units and hospital departments, both within Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust and referring hospitals.
