About the Role

Our Emergency Departments are split into Resuscitation, Majors, Ambulatory injuries and Paediatrics Emergencies. John Radcliffe Hospital is a Major Trauma Centre where we receive critically injured patients from the wider region. We provide weekly teaching sessions for the rostered junior doctors and have close links with the University of Oxford, offering the opportunity to develop as a Clinical Teacher through supported teaching sessions with clinical medical students. Educational supervision and career advice are provided for all junior doctors.

In the Emergency Department, Resident doctors are responsible for the initial assessment and management of the acutely sick or injured patients, under the direction of the Consultant in Emergency Medicine.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initial assessment and management of acutely sick or injured patients under the supervision of a consultant.
  • Maintain patient records using the EPR system, write discharge letters and endorse results.
  • Provide live teaching to medical undergraduates and weekly departmental teaching for junior doctors.
  • Support the teaching and supervision of clinical medical students.
  • Assist in administrative duties related to patient care documentation.

Working Pattern

In the Emergency Department, a full shift system is in operation. The average weekly hours of duty are 43 hours. It is compulsory to take a 30‑minute continuous rest after every 4 hours worked and the resident doctor must coordinate this rest with the duty senior.

Training & Education

  • Half‑day departmental induction and two days of Resident Doctor teaching at the start of the job.
  • Case‑by‑case teaching on the floor and daily case‑based teaching at 4 pm handover round.
  • Access to postgraduate educational courses such as ALS, APLS and ATLS.
  • Opportunities for clinical teaching through the University of Oxford.

Qualifications

  • Full registration and licence to practice with the GMC, MB BS or equivalent (required).
  • UK professional registration (required).
  • Foundation training, 4 months EM experience, and experience working in an Emergency Department (required).
  • Intercalated degree (desirable).
  • Advanced life support course (ALS/APLS/ATLS) (desirable).
  • Prior NHS experience (desirable).
  • Prior experience in prioritisation and time‑management skills (desirable).
  • Professional communication skills, punctual, courteous and well‑informed (desirable).
  • Motivation, diligence and receptiveness to learning (desirable).
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary team (desirable).

Contract

Full‑time contract (FTC) for FY2‑CT2 level doctors. Approximately 25% of clinical work will be at the Horton Site.
