Senior Engineer, Process Controls
The Senior Engineer, Process Controls will provide engineering support for Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and Safety Instrumented System (SIS) logic solvers for the refinery and its associated off‑site facilities. The role leads all phases of lifecycle management for DCS and SIS systems in scope, including design, optimisation of control strategies, major projects, cybersecurity, and ensuring compliance with corporate and legal requirements.
Responsibilities
- Providing project and maintenance support for the Refinery DCS and SIS logic solvers.
- Providing engineering design including code/logic development, construction support, and start‑up assistance for all assigned projects.
- Performing daily analysis of incidents and implementing appropriate follow‑up actions, including Root Cause Analyses.
- Supporting DCS, Field Instrumentation and Control System Network & Security interfaces with the industrial control system networks.
- Leading the DCS / SIS Logic Solver obsolescence program and spares criticality program.
- Providing design, construction support and start‑up assistance on engineering projects.
- Executing software verification, backups, patches and upgrades to DCS / SIS equipment and configuration tools, ensuring effective disaster recovery plans and procedures.
- Managing DCS / SIS Logic Solver third‑party support contracts.
- Developing and maintaining DCS procedures, policies and lifecycle documentation to maintain evergreen status.
- Establishing and maintaining DCS / SIS maintenance plans.
- Developing the Process Controls LRP, L&E Engineering maintenance budget and TA/SUS scope.
- Performing DCS / SIS Logic Solver engineering review of MoC’s and allocated TD memos.
- Developing a competency profile for L&E personnel in relation to critical Process Controls systems and processes, and producing, maintaining and delivering the associated training packages.
- Driving continuous improvement of the L&E execution team Process Controls capability.
- Providing strategic direction and guidance to the refinery and its associated facilities in relation to Process Controls.
Qualifications
Basic / Required
- Degree‑qualified Engineer with experience (or equivalent with experience) in DCS and SIS lifecycle activities.
- Member or working towards Professional Engineering Institute accreditation (e.g., IEng, IET) and Chartered Engineer status, or demonstrable CPD with a strong commitment to achieve CEng status.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all employees and contractors.
- Excellent diagnostic and logical thinking ability.
- Ability to balance short‑term and long‑term tasks, manage conflicting priorities, and deliver on customers’ expectations.
- Self‑starter who can work in a diverse team environment.
Preferred
- Knowledge of all phases of DCS and SIS lifecycle activities, including design, engineering, operations and maintenance.
- Knowledge and practical experience with a wide range of DCS, PLCs, HMI, SCADA, SIS Logic Solvers and communication networks.
- Experience with basic process control system strategies and practical hands‑on optimisation of control schemes.
- Experience of terminal automation systems and field instrumentation.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity concepts and safeguards.
- Normal SIS lifecycle qualifications (e.g., TUV FS Eng) and experience.
