Band 5 Specialist School Nurse – Farnham

We are seeking a compassionate and enthusiastic Band 5 Specialist School Nurse to provide high‑quality nursing care and support for children and young people aged 2–21 with severe, profound, and multiple learning and physical difficulties. The role is based at Ridgeway School in Farnham and is part of a team that includes a senior school nurse and an assistant practitioner.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, high‑quality, child‑centred nursing care, including medication oversight, tracheostomy and PEG care, and emergency response.
  • Assess health needs, make informed clinical decisions, and contribute to safeguarding and multi‑agency work.
  • Communicate effectively with children, families, and professionals, using alternative communication methods where necessary.
  • Develop and review personalised care plans and empower families in managing health needs.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records and ensure safe use of medical equipment.
  • Provide training, supervision, and mentorship to school staff and students.
  • Support service improvement through audit, evaluation, and evidence‑based practice.
  • Work autonomously while upholding high professional standards across the school nursing service.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (RGN) or Registered Specialist Clinical Nurse (RSCN) with child and/or learning disability experience.
  • Experience working with children with additional needs.
  • Good working knowledge of Child Protection policy & procedures.
  • Clear understanding of community health services.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously and prioritise workload effectively.
  • Must be a car driver with a valid driving licence.

Desirable

  • School nurse degree or diploma.
  • Experience working with children with complex health needs.
  • Previous working experience in a special school setting.
  • Experience of initiating and participating in clinical audits.
