As a Member of the Prisons Health Care Team you will look after the healthcare needs of our patients residing in secure environments and will have a real impact on promoting health and well‑being. Main duties of the job

As a Substance Misuse Nurse Lead (Band 6 to Band 7 Development post) you will provide clinical support for clients with substance dependence and undertake the Non‑Medical Prescriber training. You will also take on professional developmental training as required.

You will manage complex clients, offering advice and guidance on clinical interventions to a team of practitioners, psychosocial workers and related agencies concerned with substance misuse.

This permanent development post offers registered nurses at Band 6 the opportunity to progress into a substantive Band 7 Advanced Practitioner post once the appropriate competencies and academic qualifications are met.

Once fully competent as an autonomous advanced practitioner, you will progress to an Advanced Practitioner (Band 7) role across the scope of the role.

As the SMS Nurse Lead you will demonstrate leadership and undertake both clinical and managerial responsibilities. You will ensure effective use of nursing provision, psychosocial provision and all clinical resources.

  • Ensure you and your team provide high standards of nursing care through ongoing clinical assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment for drug and alcohol users.
  • Work closely with the MDT and understand the New Model of Care (NMOC) and its application in practice.
  • Monitor physical and mental health conditions, withdrawal symptoms, CIWA and COWS assessments, vital signs as required, and conduct UDS testing.
  • Work with a high degree of autonomy and professional accountability to safely deliver the service needs.
  • Manage sensitive information empathically, including sharing discussing a patient's changing condition or needs with other relevant professionals.
  • Lead on inter‑professional and multidisciplinary working to ensure continuity of care.
  • Continuously evaluate, develop and implement improvements for clinical and psychosocial service delivery.
  • Participate and support staff in the safe management of high‑risk areas and carry out risk assessments, including handling hazardous material and body fluids, challenging behaviour, adult/child safeguarding concerns, illicit drug use.

Previous Experience

  • Substantial experience working in a drug and alcohol service.
  • Experience practising as an Independent Nurse Prescriber.

  • Experience teaching others and willingness to undertake a teaching and assessing qualification within six months of commencing post.
  • Community nursing experience.
  • Experience working with and delivering services to injecting drug users.
  • Experience supplying and administering hepatitis vaccines.
  • Advanced assessment skills.

Education and Qualifications

  • Registered Mental Nurse or Registered General Nurse.
  • Evidence of continuing personal development and post‑registration training in nursing care assessment and treatment of substance misuse clients.
  • V300 Independent Nurse Prescriber or applicant currently enrolled in an Independent Nurse Prescribing course.
  • Degree or Masters in Drugs and Alcohol Studies or equivalent qualification.
  • Completed the Motivational Interviewing Training Module.
