Job Overview

Band 5 Registered Nurses are required to join the established ward team at Portree Hospital, a community hospital located in northern Skye. The ward comprises an inpatient unit and an Urgent Care Centre, staffed by general practitioners from Portree Medical Practice Monday to Friday, with out‑of‑hours support from Broadford Hospital. Nurses assist advanced practitioners as needed.

The ward is mixed, providing rehabilitation, end‑of‑life / palliative care, and dementia care to patients from the local community. Anticipated clinical duties include enteral feeding via PEG, support for palliative and dementia care, and active participation in discharge planning with the goal of patients returning home where possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive nursing care in rehabilitation, palliative, and dementia settings.
  • Perform enteral feeding via PEG and other related clinical skills.
  • Assist in discharge planning and coordination with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Exercise clinical judgment and initiative during out‑of‑hours when GPs or advanced practitioners are not on site.
  • Collaborate with the sister hospital in Broadford and other facilities as required.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Registered Nurse, Band 5.
  • Experience in community nursing, especially with rehabilitation, end‑of‑life, and dementia care.
  • Proficient in clinical skills such as enteral feeding via PEG.
  • Full driving licence is an advantage.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work in a rural, holiday destination environment.
  • Relocation package may be available.
  • Knowledge of the agenda for change 2026 criteria and associated pay structures.
  • Gaelic language skills are welcomed but not mandatory.

Working Hours & Pay

  • Effective from 1st April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will be reduced from 37 to 36 hours, with part‑time hours adjusted pro‑rata. An increase in hourly rate will ensure pay remains unaffected.
