We are looking to appoint to a Whole-Time Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in Pleural disease and Lung Cancer to work at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Northern General Hospital.

This post offers the opportunity to deliver first class specialist clinical care and develop the specialty services in a large University teaching hospital. Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice is required, together with Membership of the Royal College of Physicians.

Applicants are required to hold a CCT in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) medicine, or to be eligible for a CCT within six months of the date of interview.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Should any further vacancies arise shortlisted applicants will be considered.

Qualifications

  • Registered (or eligible to be registered) with the GMC with a licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Name on the specialist register (dual accreditation, Respiratory Medicine and GIM) or eligible within 6 months of the date of interview
  • Higher medical or biomedical degree (MD or PhD)
  • Additional lung cancer/pleural specialist experience such as a fellowship

Clinical experience

  • Substantial experience in Respiratory Medicine
  • Ability to provide an expert opinion and to work as an independent practitioner in Respiratory Medicine.
  • Subspecialty experience to complement the needs of the department.

Research

  • Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate
  • Experience of research related to Respiratory Medicine.
  • First-author papers relating to Respiratory Medicine in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
  • Previous or on-going research in the field with publications in high quality peer reviewed journals

Teaching and training

  • Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • To have the ability and willingness to teach at all levels and to all groups of staff

Continuous Professional Development

  • Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio

Management and Administration

  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team (MDT)
  • Awareness of current NHS issues
  • Evidence of ability to work with management and previous experience of management groups.

Clinical governance and audit

  • Committed to and understands the principles of clinical governance
  • Experience in performing clinical audit
  • Understands the requirements of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation
  • Completion and publication of a substantive audit project or service improvement project

Personal attributes

  • Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values
  • Good oral and written communications skills

Competence and clinical skills

  • Demonstrable competence in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine
  • Ability to practice Evidence Based Medicine
  • Ability to set up or develop a specialist service
