Job Title: Language Specialist (Part‑time)
Hourly Rate: £35.00 per hour, with reimbursement for reasonable travel costs.
Hours: Part‑time, flexible contractual basis. The role is based on‑site in either London or Greater Manchester during standard office hours. Remote, hybrid or homeworking is not possible.
About the Role
As a Part‑time Linguist you will apply your language skills and cultural expertise to a variety of projects that support UK national security. Your responsibilities include translating and transcribing language materials, and, where suitable, providing interpreting support. You may also contribute to the development of language tools, resources and training.
You will work independently on project‑based tasks but will collaborate with colleagues when required. Your work will directly support intelligence analysis and operational planning.

About You
You do not need formal professional qualifications, but you must have a high level of proficiency in your language – at least C1 level according to CEFR – with excellent writing, speaking, listening and reading skills. Fluency in English is required.
We welcome candidates who have learned their language through academic study, community use, heritage background, or lived experience. Passion and commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality translations and transcriptions are essential.
Additional expectations include strong attention to detail, ability to work independently, competence in using IT systems, and curiosity to learn new tools and workflows. Experience in teaching or training is advantageous.
Training and Development
On board, you will receive an induction that introduces you to colleagues and gives an overview of the role, workflows and organisational context.
A line manager will be available to support you on a day‑to‑day basis, handle tasking and development needs, and serve as your main point of contact. You will also engage with the wider community of linguists to share insights and learn from peers.
Rewards and Benefits

Reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses to your designated office location. Public transport costs may be claimed, and you should select the most cost‑effective routes and ticketing options. Relocation costs are not provided.
