GMS is seeking an experienced and credible leader to head up its Medical Equipment Engineering Services function.
This is a senior role responsible for ensuring the safe, effective and compliant management of medical equipment supporting clinical and operational services across Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, Cheltenham General Hospital and associated facilities.
The postholder will act as the organisation's professional lead for medical equipment engineering, providing expert oversight of governance, performance and risk, and ensuring alignment with national standards and regulatory requirements.
The role combines operational leadership with strategic responsibility, contributing to long-term planning for equipment lifecycle management, capital investment and service development. The postholder will provide assurance to senior leadership and governance committees and will also play a role in supporting services delivered to external customers as part of GMS's growing commercial portfolio.

Main duties of the job
You will lead the delivery and continuous improvement of medical equipment engineering services, ensuring high standards of safety, compliance and performance across all sites.
This includes oversight of equipment maintenance, risk management, audit and assurance processes, and performance reporting against agreed standards.
You will provide authoritative professional advice to clinical and senior leaders, supporting informed decision-making on medical equipment use, investment and risk.
The role includes leadership of the workforce, ensuring appropriate capacity, capability and resilience, alongside contributing to capital planning, procurement activity and lifecycle management.
You will work with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, suppliers and external customers, supporting the delivery and development of services beyond the Trust and contributing to the sustainability and growth of the service.
Technical and Operational Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the delivery of Medical Equipment Engineering Services across all sites, ensuring services support patient safety, clinical priorities and operational resilience.
- Provide expert professional and technical advice on all aspects of medical equipment management, including maintenance, testing, calibration, repair, replacement and obsolescence planning.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, national guidance and best practice relating to medical equipment, including MHRA guidance, Managing Medical Devices, Health & Safety Executive requirements and Care Quality Commission standards.
- Maintain and develop governance frameworks, policies, procedures and quality management systems to ensure robust compliance and assurance.
- Lead oversight of medical equipment risk management, ensuring appropriate controls, escalation and assurance are embedded within organisational risk and audit frameworks.
- Oversee the management of safety alerts, recalls and hazard notices through the Central Alerting System, ensuring timely implementation and assurance reporting.
- Monitor service performance against agreed standards, SLAs and KPIs, producing performance and assurance reports for senior leadership and governance committees.
- Ensure medical equipment requirements are embedded within procurement activity, service contracts and capital programmes, supporting value for money and technical compliance.
- Contribute to business cases, service specifications and capital planning for medical equipment replacement, investment and service development.
- Represent GMS during regulatory inspections, audits and external reviews, providing expert input and ensuring appropriate follow up actions are delivered.

Additional Requirements
- Regular cross site working across Cheltenham and Gloucester hospital sites and associated facilities.
- Occasional requirement to work in clinical, technical or plant environments, with appropriate use of PPE.
- Participation in the senior manager on call rota, providing leadership support during incidents or periods of heightened risk.
- Flexible working may be required to meet operational, regulatory and governance deadlines.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Educated to Master's Degree in Medical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Management or a related technical discipline, or equivalent experience
- Evidence of senior-level leadership or management training, or equivalent experience
- Chartered Engineer (CENG) status or working towards chartership through a relevant professional body (e.g. IET, IPEM)
- Formal training in project or programme management methodologies
Experience
- Significant senior leadership experience within medical equipment engineering or a comparable regulated technical or engineering service
- Experience managing complex services across multiple sites
- Experience leading compliance, audit and assurance activity within a regulated environment
- Experience contributing to national, regional or professional advisory groups
- Experience supporting capital planning, equipment replacement, or lifecycle management programmes
Knowledge
- In-depth knowledge of medical equipment governance, regulatory compliance and risk management within a healthcare environment
