Company Description
Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their lives easier and save them money. As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world’s money.
Team & Role
We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join the Account Communications team. We own the platform that delivers millions of customer communications every day — emails, push notifications, in‑app messages, and more.
How We Work
For everything we do, we keep our customers' needs in mind. We prioritise projects using research based on data, collect feedback from customers, and learn from our mistakes. At Wise, we believe in independent teams where we define our priorities ourselves and everyone can contribute with ideas and suggestions.
Impact
Your work will directly impact millions of customers who rely on Wise to keep them informed about their money. The communications we deliver carry regulatory obligations and are essential to maintaining customer trust — reliability and accuracy at this scale is what makes the challenge exciting.
Key Focus Areas
- Improving delivery reliability and visibility across all communication channels.
- Evolving our platform infrastructure for scale and cost efficiency.
- Building tooling to help teams manage customer communications.
- Adding new capabilities to existing platforms.
Qualifications
- You know how to deliver complex product solutions and build distributed systems used by thousands of customers every hour.
- You are proficient in backend programming languages like Java, Kotlin, Python or Go and are willing to learn and work with Java services.
- You have extensive experience in designing and implementing asynchronous, reliable and scalable systems in microservices environments.
- You have a strong product mindset and genuine passion for user experience.
- Clean, efficient, and well‑tested code is your standard.
- You are comfortable using AI‑assisted development tools and apply engineering judgement to everything you ship.
Nice to Have
- Experience with messaging or event‑driven systems.
- Experience working with email delivery infrastructure.
- Experience in API‑first development.
- Experience with IaC is a plus.
Benefits
- Starting salary: £87,500 + £111k + RSUs
- Wise benefits (travel, health, pension, etc.)
We believe teams are strongest when they are diverse, equitable and inclusive. We have a truly international team and celebrate our differences. Every Wise employee feels respected, empowered to contribute to our mission and able to progress in their careers.
