We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced EC&I Engineer to support critical projects within the nuclear industry, with a particular focus on decommissioning and safety‑critical systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for the specification, design, integration, and validation of EC&I systems across complex decommissioning projects in line with nuclear safety regulations.
This role requires deep technical expertise in safety systems (including SIL‑rated systems), a strong understanding of nuclear standards and compliance, and the ability to deliver across all project phases, from concept through to commissioning and handover.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the design and implementation of electrical, control and instrumentation systems for nuclear decommissioning projects.
- Ensure safety‑related control systems meet required SIL classifications and comply with UK nuclear regulatory frameworks (e.g. ONR, BS EN 61508, IEC 61511).
- Produce, review, and approve technical documentation including specifications, calculations, drawings, schematics, and functional design documents.
- Carry out hazard identification, HAZOP/HAZAN studies, and functional safety assessments.
- Provide technical leadership and mentoring to junior engineers within the EC&I discipline.
- Interface with project teams, clients, and regulatory stakeholders to ensure design compliance and robust safety justifications.
- Support site surveys, commissioning plans, FAT/SAT procedures, and troubleshooting of installed systems.
- Drive continuous improvement in engineering quality, project delivery, and nuclear safety culture.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Degree‑qualified in Electrical Engineering, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Significant experience working in the nuclear sector, including decommissioning projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in the design and implementation of safety systems, including SIL‑rated and fail‑safe systems.
- Strong knowledge of functional safety standards (IEC 61508 / 61511) and UK nuclear regulations.
- Experience producing and reviewing design deliverables to a high technical standard in a regulated environment.
- Competent in using design software and EC&I tools (e.g. AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, PLC/SCADA platforms).
- Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines and with external stakeholders.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards it (e.g. with IET).
- Familiarity with decommissioning project lifecycle stages and legacy systems upgrade/replacement.
- Experience with remote handling, robotics integration, or safety case authorship in a nuclear context.
- SC or DV clearance (or eligibility to obtain).
