A leading UK-based clinical research organisation is seeking an experienced Director of Participant Strategy & Engagement to lead and transform the end-to-end participant lifecycle across a growing portfolio of early-phase clinical trials.


This is a senior strategic leadership opportunity for someone passionate about patient-centric recruitment, operational excellence, and building high-performing multidisciplinary teams within a fast-paced clinical research environment.


The Opportunity


You will be responsible for developing and executing the organisation’s participant engagement and recruitment strategy — ensuring studies meet recruitment targets, timelines, budget expectations, and regulatory standards.


The successful candidate will oversee the full participant journey including:

✔ Identification & attraction

✔ Engagement & enrolment

✔ Retention & participant experience

✔ Recruitment systems & CRM optimisation

✔ Cross-functional operational delivery

✔ Quality improvement & process transformation


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic and operational delivery of participant recruitment and engagement across all clinical studies
  • Drive performance against recruitment KPIs, timelines, and commercial targets
  • Oversee participant recruitment budgets and forecasting
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams and foster a high-accountability culture
  • Implement process improvement, automation, and quality initiatives
  • Analyse participant flow, screening failures, and recruitment trends to optimise performance
  • Build external partnerships with healthcare and research organisations
  • Ensure compliance with GCP, GDPR, PECR, and regulatory requirements
  • Act as the senior escalation point for participant engagement matters


About You

You will likely bring:

  • Significant leadership experience within clinical research, healthcare operations, patient recruitment, or CRO environments
  • Strong operational and commercial acumen
  • Experience managing complex recruitment strategies and participant engagement programmes
  • Excellent stakeholder management and team leadership skills
  • A data-driven approach to performance improvement and operational delivery
  • Experience leading change, systems implementation, or digital transformation initiatives
