We are looking for a General Surgeon to join our modern hospital at Emerson's Green, Bristol. As a Consultant, you will have pride in the quality of your work, be well versed and involved in clinical governance, audit and be a good team player who is ready to be flexible and willing to meet the needs of the service and colleagues. We are accepting full time and part-time applications. Our Full-time Consultants work a 4-day week of 10 hrs per day in line with a normal 10PA job plan, there are opportunities for additional work in the week and financial incentives, above this, for efficient lists. The on-call is light and covered between the team and mainly based on advice to the Resident Medical Officer. Support PAs are built into the job plan in addition to the monthly governance meetings.

What you’ll be doing

The post holder will be required to perform a range of general surgical procedures on patients referred to the Treatment Centre, working in accordance with Treatment Centre protocols and working practices. Applicants will be required to demonstrate a high level of operative skill in the following areas:

  • Inguinal, Femoral, and other Hernia Repair – both Open and Laparoscopic
  • Haemorrhoidectomy and other Perianal Procedures
  • Cholecystectomy – both Open and Laparoscopic.
  • Varicose Vein Surgery
  • Minor Surgical Procedures

Duties will include pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative activities as well as time allocated for clinical supporting work. Opportunities may arise for further clinical work in addition to the basic contract.

What we’ll look for in you

You will be a UK registered medical professional, who is listed on the Specialist GMC register as well as evidence of speciality training.

  • UK registered Medical Degree
  • MBChB or evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Past record of academic achievement
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist GMC Registration in relevant speciality
  • Wide training and experience in surgery
  • Able to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems within general surgery
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
  • Relevant experience and training in the performance of laparoscopic procedures
