About the Role

Bath & North East Somerset Council is seeking an experienced Senior Technical Officer – Networking to join our ICT Infrastructure team. This senior technical role is focused on ensuring the integrity, availability and ongoing development of the Council’s enterprise network infrastructure, enabling critical services to operate effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support, maintain and enhance LAN, WAN, WiFi and network security environments across the Council.
  • Design, install, configure and support network infrastructure including switches and wireless solutions.
  • Design, install, configure and support network firewall infrastructure and network security, understanding the complexities required to maintain a secure network.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex networking incidents and undertake root cause analysis.
  • Deliver infrastructure upgrades, migrations and networking improvement projects.
  • Manage and coordinate work delivered by external suppliers and contractors.
  • Maintain technical documentation, standards and procedures.
  • Communicate technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to technicians where required.

About You

You will be an experienced networking professional with a proven track record in large, complex IT environments. You will be organised, proactive and confident in taking ownership of technical issues and projects.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • At least five years’ experience supporting large LAN and WAN network environments.
  • The Council now hosts the majority of infrastructure in Microsoft Azure, so a strong understanding of this environment is essential.
  • Extensive experience with network switches, firewalls, WiFi and Windows-based networking technologies.
  • Experience designing, installing and maintaining LAN, WAN and WiFi solutions.
  • ITIL Intermediate or equivalent qualification.
  • A Level standard qualification in ICT or equivalent experience.
  • Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) qualification.
  • A relevant network vendor equivalent certification.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills.

Working Arrangements

  • Participation in a rota including occasional evening and out of hours support.
  • Flexible working options including some remote working by agreement.
  • Standard Council flexi-time scheme applies, subject to service needs.
  • Flexibility to travel across the Bath & North East Somerset area will be required.
