Job Overview
The Infection Prevention and Control Team at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an Infection Prevention and Control Site Lead as part of a job share. The role will interface across Care Groups, provide expert advice, and work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
In a job share arrangement, the successful candidate will jointly lead a team at William Harvey Hospital while also taking on a Trust-wide strategic lead role on key IPC issues, supported by the Deputy DIPC and DIPC.
The position is structured around four pillars of practice: Clinical Practice, Leadership, Facilitating Learning, and Evidence, Research and Development.
East Kent Hospitals is one of the largest trusts in England, operating five hospitals and community clinics that serve a local population of around 800,000 people.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as an expert resource on IPC issues, providing evidence‑based advice and support across disciplines.
- Promote the reduction of healthcare‑associated infection through education, surveillance, audit, policy development, and innovation.
- Serve as the joint site lead for ensuring the Trust Wide Improvement Plan (TWIP) for the IPC Programme is completed for the site and the wider IPC/Decontamination portfolio.
- Be visible and accessible to all healthcare staff, guiding them to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients regarding IPC.
Communication and Relationship Skills
- Demonstrate high levels of communication and interpersonal skills for negotiation and influencing multidisciplinary staff in complex situations.
- Provide highly complex and sensitive information to patients, relatives, carers, members of the public and staff where significant barriers to acceptance may exist.
- Diffuse potentially hostile and antagonistic situations with staff, patients and relatives using advanced negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Develop and deliver formal presentations to large groups in a credible manner.
Analytical Skills
- Assess and interpret highly complex and sometimes conflicting information based on patient and environmental conditions and laboratory reports, including outbreak management.
- Make decisions regarding patient care such as movement/transfer of patients with infections, closure of wards and availability of isolation facilities while assessing available resources.
Planning and Organisational Skills
- Deputise for the Deputy Director of IPC as required.
- Plan and organise the complex workload of the site IPC Team.
Other Requirements
Applicants must be self‑motivated, flexible, and serve as a role model across disciplines. They must be able to manage IPC Nurse Specialists at William Harvey Hospital as part of the job share. Candidates are required to declare any need for a Certificate of Sponsorship on their application form. The role is available for individuals eligible for a Skilled Worker Visa, if required.
