Trust Doctor in Complex Early Pregnancy & Acute Gynaecology (ST4+)

Closing date: 27 May 2026

We are seeking a committed, dynamic, and enthusiastic clinician to undertake advanced clinical training in Complex Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology within a large consultant‑led service at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. This fellowship offers an excellent opportunity to develop advanced skills aligned with the RCOG Special Interest Training Module (SITM) in Complex Early Pregnancy and Non‑Elective Gynaecology, supporting preparation for future consultant practice or further subspecialty training in Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology.

The post provides a structured and supportive environment with training across multiple hospital sites, including consultant‑led Early Pregnancy Unit services at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, elective benign gynaecology operating at the Princess Royal Hospital, and dedicated Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) training at Worthing Hospital.

This role is ideal for an ST4+ trainee or equivalent with a strong interest in early pregnancy ultrasound, ambulatory gynaecology, emergency benign gynaecological surgery, and service development within Acute Gynaecology and Early Pregnancy care.

Main duties

The post holder will work closely with Miss Oksana Dickinson and Mr Tosin Ajala and will be fully integrated into Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology services across the Trust. Duties include consultant‑led Early Pregnancy Unit clinics, ambulatory emergency gynaecology, acute gynaecology care, and emergency benign gynaecological surgery.

The role offers extensive exposure to assessing and managing ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy of unknown location, miscarriage, acute pelvic pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding. Successful applicants will gain experience in medical and surgical pathways, including outpatient and theatre‑based miscarriage management, care of haemodynamically unstable patients, and supervised laparoscopic management of ectopic pregnancy and other acute benign conditions.

A key component is structured early pregnancy ultrasound training within a consultant‑supported environment, with opportunities to develop competencies aligned with RCOG and AEPU standards. The fellowship also includes dedicated experience in Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) at Worthing Hospital and elective benign gynaecology operating at the Princess Royal Hospital.

Participation in the obstetric on‑call rota provides exposure to high‑risk obstetrics within a tertiary maternity service linked to the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, supporting maintenance and development of advanced obstetric skills alongside specialist EPU and Acute Gynaecology training.

Requirements

  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice

  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent

  • Higher Degree (where appropriate)

  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty

  • Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams

  • Understanding of NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints

  • Evidence of managerial skills: achievements / courses attended
