Main Duties

  • Deliver care to people with mental health issues receiving inpatient care in an acute physical health setting, often on a 1:1 basis.
  • Support all clinical areas of the Trust as required.
  • Ensure that trust and local policies, procedures and NMC code of conduct are followed.
  • Assess, plan, provide, maintain and evaluate patient care.
  • Supervise and guide other staff, including health‑care assistants and students.
  • Advocate for patients experiencing mental health concerns and promote parity of esteem.
  • Maintain safe medication ordering, administration and custody in line with trust policies.
  • Coordinate discharge planning and admission processes in partnership with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Escort patients to other wards or departments as required.
  • Provide health promotion, education, and support, and refer to appropriate professionals or agencies.
  • Act in emergency situations, following emergency procedures such as fire and resuscitation, and provide support to junior staff.
  • Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for all patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.
  • Maintain documentation of incidents, complaints and equipment status as required.
  • Apply manual handling regulations and assess patients’ manual handling needs.

Requirements / Applicants Must

  • Hold RMN registration with a current NMC licence to practice.
  • Minimum of 12 months post‑qualification experience (15 months for NQN’s).
  • Recent acute hospital experience within the last 18–24 months.
  • Drive, enthusiasm and willingness to commit to a 4‑day induction programme if successful.
  • Right to work in the UK (with relevant Adaptation/ONP if applicable).
  • Availability to commence work within 3 months of offer.
  • Successful applicants will normally commence at the minimum of the scale unless they have prior NHS service at the same band; progression occurs by annual increments.

Education / Training / Qualifications (Essential)

  • Registered Mental Health Nurse with current live NMC registration.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Desirable Criteria

  • Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent).

Work Experience (Essential)

  • Evidence of broad range of mental health nursing experience.
  • Training relevant to the RMN role.
  • Experience working in an appropriate clinical setting.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities (Essential)

  • Advanced communication skills, verbal & written, including report writing and record keeping.
  • Basic computer/IT skills with intent to develop in line with service needs (IHS, Acis, Email).
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Time management and basic problem‑solving skills.
