Electrical / Electronic Engineer

Location: Culham Science Centre, Abingdon, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

Grade: G, Department: Tokamak Systems, Division: Plasma Science and Fusion Operations. Employment type: Permanent.

Salary: £57,117 per year (inclusive of Specialist Allowance), plus benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Act as technical expert for major elements of the MAST-U Tokamak pulsed power supplies plant, supporting safe operation, maintenance and continuous improvement.
  • Lead plant‑related activities, including maintenance, fault‑finding, repairs, refurbishments and upgrade projects, ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently.
  • Serve as Plant Responsible Officer (PRO) to advise operational teams, maintain accurate technical documentation and support staff training.
  • Support large‑scale engineering projects and undertake rostered operational duties, applying diagnostic, analytical and problem‑solving techniques.
  • Train and support staff working with pulsed power electrical systems.
  • Apply technical expertise in high‑current and high‑voltage power systems.
  • Review technical documentation and supplier specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • High‑level experience in design, installation and commissioning of electrical/electronic and high‑voltage, high‑power conversion systems in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with electrical/electronic safety systems and procedures, and preparing safety documentation.
  • Experience in component, sub‑system and system‑level fault‑finding.
  • Proven experience in installation and commissioning of C&I systems.
  • Proven experience in project planning, including resource and cost profiling.
  • Proven experience in an operational control room.
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical teams and projects.
  • Specialist knowledge of Magnetic Coil, Neutral Beam and RF Heating Power Supply systems.
  • Knowledge of BS7671 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations).
  • Knowledge of Construction, Design and Management Regulations – Works Supervision.
  • Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent, or qualified by experience.
  • IOSH Managing Safety qualification – Risk Assessment and Work Control.
  • Professional registration achieved or in progress.
