The post holder will be responsible for the medical care of patients over the age of 65 admitted with rib fractures, head injuries, all routine traumatic non-femur fractures and select non-trauma patients. Part of the role is to provide routine cover Orthogeriatrics during leave. There is also scope within the job plan for further service development, which will be agreed with the successful candidate. Anticipated work includes improving patient care within the surgical directorate.

The post is based at Ealing Hospital, and the post holder is expected to assist in the development of an innovative Surgical Liaison service. The aim is to develop the existing service and in particular support the care of elderly patients admitted to the hospital under General Surgery. The appointee will play a key role in the development of the services, contribute to acute care of surgical patients, and provide medical support to the treatment plan and discharge planning.

Although the post is based at Ealing Hospital, there may be a requirement to work from any of LNWH Trust sites.

The position is full‑time (10 PA); however, applicants wishing to work less than full time are also invited to apply.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • MRCP
  • Experience in the management of older people
  • MD, PhD or equivalent

Knowledge & Expertise

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in General Medicine and Geriatric Medicine
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients
  • IT skills and computer literacy
  • NHS experience within the last 3 years
  • Surgical or Orthogeriatric experience

Registration

  • Entry on Specialist Register in Geriatric Medicine and General Medicine via CCT (within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights

Teaching

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
  • MD or PhD
  • Evidence of ongoing interest and achievement in research

Management & Audit

  • Understanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications
  • Knowledge of finance/budgets
  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures
  • Ability to motivate and develop the MDT, balancing departmental and personal objectives
  • Evidence of service audit or change management

Language

  • Able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements

Personal Skills

  • Energy and enthusiasm and the ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other staff and agencies
