Purpose of the role

Fleet Engineer within the Rail Profile Treatment Team at Colas Rail.

Lead the maintenance and development of your fleet within the team, you will be responsible for all elements of engineering compliance and fleet development. You will work within a team of 3 Fleet Engineers and will report directly to the maintenance manager. You will improve reliability, provide pivotal changes to Maintenance Instructions and drive innovation on the platforms you are responsible for.

Key Success Measures

  • Safety – Actively demonstrate support for the implementation of the Colas Rail Limited Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) strategy, associated actions and resulting initiatives.
  • Profitability – Ensure rail vehicle safety, availability and reliability is maintained enabling high utilisation and successful delivery.
  • Quality – Lead and develop engineering initiatives and projects that ensure rail role will champion environmental improvements to the vehicle fleet to minimise the impact and frequency of fluid spills on the rail infrastructure.
  • Respect – Treat people in a fair and consistent way. Consistently strive to understand client's needs and build relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet Engineering and Maintenance:

  • Ensure engineering compliance and vehicle availability through planned maintenance and adherence to relevant standards.
  • Develop and manage a lifecycle strategy for the rail vehicles in your fleet.
  • Track and manage the lifecycle of strategic components and assets.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Manager to build and manage outage plans from start to finish.

Innovation and Improvement:

  • Promote and implement innovation within the team by following Network Rail's Engineering Change Procedures.
  • Lead the review, optimization, and amendment of vehicle maintenance instructions, including task-based risk assessments.
  • Support business unit initiatives for reliability and best practices.

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Support internal and external audits and promptly address any issues raised.
  • Ensure all fault reporting is completed accurately using the Fleet Asset Management System (FAMS).
  • Provide engineering expertise for contract and tender submissions.
  • Follow all Lifesaving rules and relevant policies and procedures.
  • As you will expect the organisation may change from time to time and you will be expected to meet the operational requirements.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required from time to time.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Engineering Background: An HNC/D or higher in an engineering discipline is required. You should have extensive experience as a rail vehicle fleet engineer, with a strong background in maintenance, reliability, overhaul and refurbishment.
  • Professional Membership: Member of a professional engineering body, ideally with Incorporated status or higher.
  • Rail Industry Expertise: A deep understanding of rail vehicle engineering, maintenance, the rail operating environment and Railway Group Standards.

Technical Skills & Responsibilities

  • Technical Expertise: Experienced in compliance, asset management, and implementing change control procedures.
  • Safety & Financial Acumen: A solid grasp of safety legislation, corporate safety procedures and cost control management.
  • Operational Support: Able to provide on‑call engineering support and deputise for the Head of Engineering as required.
