Consultant – Adult Congenital Heart Disease

The post will be appointed to the Barts Heart Centre, based at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. The adult CHD service provides care to around 12,000 patients and includes a busy surgical and congenital interventional programme with subspecialty services such as pregnancy, PHT, aortopathy and transition.

Responsibilities

  • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
  • Leadership, development and organisation of services in line with the Trust’s business plans and liaison with the Clinical Director for ACHD, General Manager and the Cardiovascular Clinical Academic Group.
  • Develop own interests and subspecialties within the specialty, subject to business planning principles and commissioners’ approval, and actively participate in research programmes.
  • Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.
  • Participate fully in department management and liaise closely with the Clinical Director, Service Manager, General Manager and Clinical Academic Group Director.
  • Provide outpatient care for new and follow‑up patients at the Basildon outreach clinic, with OP clinics typically seeing 8–10 patients (2–4 new) per list.
  • Commit to inpatient care with a Consultant‑of‑the‑Week model on a 1:7 basis, join a 24/7 on‑call rota providing coverage for post‑operative CHD patients, including out‑of‑hours duty from home and weekend ward rounds.
  • Participate weekly (and rotate as chair) in the main Congenital MDTs, a monthly MDT for simple intervention, and other relevant MDTs.
  • Contribute to administrative, teaching and research activities within Barts Health and the Heart Hospital, represent the department on various trust committees, and take responsibility for delegated areas according to interests and availability.
  • Teach medical students and trainee cardiologists and participate in weekly postgraduate meetings, audit, governance and training meetings, with a focus on improving governance standards.
  • Carry out additional duties as required in emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, with duties subject to change according to service needs.
