About the Role

The NHM Deep-Sea Systematics and Ecology Research Group is studying the natural history of the deep sea. This position invites a Post-Doctoral Research Assistant to lead taxonomic, evolutionary and ecological studies of deep-sea invertebrates from the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone. Responsibilities include using integrative DNA and morphological methods to identify benthic invertebrate specimens collected during two research expeditions, collaborating with partner institutes (National Oceanography Centre, Norwegian Research Centre), managing complex datasets, co‑supervising research assistants, and producing client reports, scientific publications and public engagement materials.

About You

You bring substantial experience in invertebrate sequencing and taxonomic knowledge, confidence managing complex datasets, and the ability to build collaborative relationships across institutions. You have experience working with diverse stakeholders (researchers, students, curators, external partners) in a lab environment, can manage priorities, and have a track record of scientific publications and report writing for funders.

Requirements

Applicants must be available to start in July 2026. The role does not qualify for Museum sponsorship; successful candidates must have a valid right to work in the UK.

Hybrid Working

The position operates on a hybrid model requiring regular weekly attendance, with a pattern of on-site and home working to be agreed with the manager.
