Job Overview

We are expanding our counselling team in Barnet Talking Therapies. The role is for a counsellor with a background in time‑limited therapy who will provide services to Step 3 clients. Accredited with the BACP, UKCP or equivalent, champions a hybrid model with both in‑person and remote sessions. The role supports professional development, supervision, peer support, and the opportunity for IAPT training and advancement to Band 7.

Responsibilities

  • Provide qualified, time‑limited counselling to Step 3 clients.
  • Offer advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to staff from other agencies.
  • Work to a pattern of clinical hours that supports service and local population needs.
  • Liaise with local mental health‑based services and voluntary community agencies.
  • Monitor and audit evidence‑based practice.
  • Contribute to policy and service development within the team and area.
  • Work within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Accreditation with BACP, UKCP or equivalent, or eligibility for accreditation.
  • At least 2 years post‑qualification experience.
  • Specialist IAPT training and accreditation in an IAPT‑approved modality (e.g., DIT, IPT, Counselling for Depression).

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in mental health services.
  • Experience in primary care settings.
  • Provision of evidence‑based psychological interventions.
  • Experience working within an IAPT service.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement training outcomes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Capability to develop good therapeutic relationships with clients.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of anxiety and depression presentation in primary care.
  • Awareness of work‑related mental health issues and impacts.
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based psychological therapies relevant to the post.
  • Familiarity with medications used in anxiety, depression and other common mental health problems.

Other Requirements

  • High level of enthusiasm and motivation.
  • Ability to work within a team and foster positive working relationships.
  • Respect for others and confidentiality.
  • Fluency in languages other than English.
