Senior Transport Planner
Location: Stockport
Salary: Circa £35,000 (DOE)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (with evening & weekend on-call cover on a rota basis)

My client is seeking an experienced Senior Transport Planner to join a busy and well‑established transport operation in Stockport. This is a key role within the operations team, responsible for planning and coordinating a general haulage fleet while ensuring compliance, efficiency, and strong commercial performance across both rigid and articulated vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and allocate transport resources effectively to ensure smooth daily operations and maintain service levels
  • Adjust transport plans in response to operational changes, delays, or unexpected issues
  • Communicate clearly with drivers regarding job allocations, updates, and end‑of‑day debriefs
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, always ensuring a high level of service
  • Identify and develop opportunities to work with new customers and approved sub‑contractors
  • Make sound commercial decisions when allocating work to sub‑contractors
  • Ensure all vehicles and equipment are scheduled correctly and remain compliant with legal requirements
  • Accurately update and maintain transport management system (TMS) records
  • Work closely with internal departments to support smooth and efficient operations
  • Provide out‑of‑hours support on a rota basis via telephone
  • Carry out general administrative duties to support the wider team

Job skills required:

  • Strong understanding of driver hours and transport compliance regulations
  • Good geographical knowledge of the UK road network
  • Confident communicator, both written and verbal
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage changing priorities
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a busy environment
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work
  • Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and transport systems
  • A team player who can also work independently when required
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with drivers, customers, and suppliers
