Planning Policy Officer

A Local Authority is seeking an experienced Planning Policy Officer to support the delivery and implementation of its Local Plan on an initial 3-month contract.

This role will suit a planning professional with strong policy experience within a Local Authority environment and a solid understanding of planning legislation, Local Plans, and development management processes.

Working arrangements are ideally 2 days per week in the office (Tuesday and Thursday), although flexibility can be considered for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the preparation, review, and implementation of Local Plan documents, Supplementary Planning Documents (SPDs), and related planning policy work
  • Support the delivery of planning policy projects including evidence gathering, monitoring, and reporting
  • Provide planning policy advice and guidance to colleagues, stakeholders, and the public
  • Prepare reports, policy documents, consultation responses, and supporting evidence
  • Appraise development proposals against Local Plan policies, Government guidance, and planning considerations
  • Support examinations, hearings, inquiries, and committee reporting where required
  • Maintain and analyse planning performance and monitoring data using GIS and digital systems
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments, external partners, and regional stakeholders to support strategic planning objectives

Requirements

  • Previous experience working within a Local Authority planning policy team is essential
  • Strong knowledge of Local Plans, planning legislation, and policy development
  • Experience preparing planning policy documents and supporting evidence
  • Ability to manage workloads independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written communication and report writing skills
  • Experience using GIS systems and planning-related databases is desirable
  • MRTPI qualification or working towards accreditation is desirable
