About the Trust

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest hospital trusts in England, operating three acute hospitals and community sites that serve a local population of around 700,000. The Trust also provides specialist services for Kent and Medway.

Opportunity

We are looking for a skilled and enthusiastic Gastroenterologist with a special interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) to join the William Harvey Hospital team in Ashford. With approximately 5,400 IBD patients in East Kent, including 930 on advanced therapies, there is a strong need for dedicated leadership and clinical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the trustwide IBD team, including a nurse consultant and four IBD nurses.
  • Manage complex IBD patients and contribute to regional working groups.
  • Develop transition clinics and joint medical/surgical clinics for patients with complex disease in line with GIRFT recommendations.
  • Provide outpatient management of IBD patients, balancing outpatient templates and endoscopy lists for the appointee.
  • Support the GI Bleeding rota and cover a 1:8 Gastroenterology ward week, including in‑reach to the emergency pathways.
  • Provide two OPD clinics per week and two general endoscopy lists, plus a session dedicated to a specialist interest.
  • Contribute to the development of specialist services such as HBP, Hepatology, complex polyp, GI physiology, and EUS.
  • Collaborate with radiologists, histopathologists, colorectal surgeons, and junior staff to support inpatient and outpatient care.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate will have an interest and preferably expertise in managing complex IBD, be able to lead and develop services, and demonstrate the capacity to work within multidisciplinary teams.
