Job overview
This is a Consultant Ophthalmologist post designed to provide sub‑specialist Vitreoretinal services for patients of the United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is a pan‑trust appointment based at Boston Pilgrim Hospital with the possibility of commitments at other sites.
This is a replacement post for which the person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post. Applicants may elect to work whole time or part time, with modification of the job content discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job
The Appointee will be expected, in conjunction with colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service supporting the provision of an effective countywide service and contributing towards achieving the 18‑week wait across the eye department. Responsibilities include:
- Deliver both vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology services, including high‑volume cataract surgery to meet contractual obligations.
- Carry out teaching duties, including postgraduate medical education and undergraduate teaching to students from Nottingham and Leicester Medical Schools.
- Teach ophthalmic trainee staff, nursing staff, and other clinical professions.
- Attend clinical audit and departmental team meetings, participate in robust clinical audit programmes and regional/national audits.
- Report all critical incidents and attend departmental audit and clinical governance meetings.
- Develop and deliver services, formulating plans for expansion and supporting the 18‑week wait target.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
On‑call commitment: Participate in a 1 in 12, category A out‑of‑hours on‑call rota responsible for the whole county. On‑call availability supplement at 3% of annual salary. Public holiday on‑call compensated with time off in lieu.
Person specification
Qualifications
- FRCS, FRCOphth or equivalent
- Registered on the specialist register for Ophthalmology
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- Training qualification Fellowship in Vitreoretinal or cataract (or a complementary subspecialist interest)
- Relevant higher degree or equivalent
- Fellowship in Glaucoma or Cataract
Training/Experience/Research
- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Vitreoretinal surgery
- Evidence of ability to carry out high‑volume cataract surgery
- Experience of clinical audit with recent findings presented
- Ability to deliver service without direct supervision
- Evidence of recent published research or case reports
- A special interest complementary to existing services
Skills
- Good communication skills, written and verbal
- Effective multidisciplinary team working and leadership skills
- Understanding of educational needs of trainees and commitment to teaching
- Experience teaching clinical skills to a wide MDT audience
