Job Title
Employment Law Manager
Summary
We are seeking a qualified Solicitor or Legal Executive, or a paralegal with five years’ experience who wishes to qualify as a solicitor, to fill the post of Employment Law Manager. The successful candidate will provide complex legal advice on employment law matters to senior management and members, supervise a team of junior colleagues, and lead the union’s Employment Law and Rights strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance and representation on employment law issues to staff, members, and senior management.
- Support, manage, and develop a team of Employment Law Caseworkers and paralegals.
- Conduct legal research, draft claims, and prepare advice and other legal documents.
- Advise the union and its members on wrongful termination, unfair dismissal, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation claims.
- Develop and implement the union’s legal policy objectives and strategy.
- Coordinate with external solicitors and internal stakeholders on personal casework.
- Represent PCS members at tribunals, civil service appeal boards, and other official bodies.
- Prepare and present reports to committees, monitor initiatives, and contribute to budgeting and planning processes.
- Promote diversity, equality, and professional development within the team.
People Management
- Allocate work, manage workflow, and plan for future staffing needs.
- Motivate and assess team performance, ensuring high standards of service.
- Identify training needs, provide or organize formal and informal training, and support staff development.
- Enforce staff conduct policies and manage disciplinary matters when necessary.
- Maintain health and safety standards and welfare of staff.
Communication and Team Working
- Write complex communications, briefs, and reports.
- Communicate with members and the union’s internal staff; produce circulars and briefings.
- Represent PCS at conferences and liaise with external organisations.
- Promote team working, organise meetings, and ensure confidentiality of sensitive information.

Qualifications and Experience
- Newly qualified Solicitor/Legal Executive or an equivalent law degree, or at least five years’ experience in employment law.
- Experience in employment law, advocacy, and representation.
- People‑management experience including induction, training, appraisal, and conduct.
- Experience in industrial relations, negotiations, and project management.
- Understanding of UK political processes and the role of trade unions.
- Knowledge of employment rights, equality legislation, and discriminatory law.

- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including reports and presentations.
- Strong negotiation and relationship‑building abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively and manage complex legal issues.
- Prioritise work, set standards, and deliver timely advice.
