Job summary
University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) is seeking an experienced and dynamic Commercial Financial Controller to provide expert financial leadership across the Trust’s commercial portfolio. This includes overseeing two commercial subsidiaries and delivering an outsourced finance function to external entities. The role supports UHB’s strategic ambition to Build Healthier Lives, ensuring commercial income streams, partnerships, ventures and contracts are financially sound, deliver value for money and align with our core values of Kind, Connected and Bold.
Main duties of the job
- Lead financial management and oversight of commercial activities and subsidiaries within UHB.
- Provide high‑quality financial planning, forecasting and commercial modelling to support strategic decision making.
- Ensure commercial ventures and income streams are developed, evaluated and monitored using robust financial frameworks.
- Produce timely, accurate and insightful financial analysis and performance reports for senior stakeholders.
- Support strong financial governance across contracts, partnerships and business cases to maximise value for the Trust.
- Advise senior leaders on financial risks, opportunities and commercial strategy.
- Foster collaborative working relationships with operational, financial and external partners to strengthen commercial performance.
- Ensure all activities align with UHB’s values and the Trust’s commitment to delivering high‑quality, sustainable healthcare services.

Qualifications – Essential
- CCAB recognised accountancy qualification.
- Post‑qualification experience in a complex environment.
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Experience – Essential
- Experience of monthly reporting cycles and population of month‑end reports.
- Report writing.
- Experience of working with other finance colleagues to ensure monthly tasks are completed within tight deadlines.
Experience – Desirable
- Experience of NHS capital reporting and funding mechanisms.
- Experience of NHS monthly and annual reporting processes.
- Experience of charity accounting and reporting and commercial entities.
