Job Description:

We are currently seeking a permanent Specialist Doctor for Forensic Physiatry located on Beech Ward. It is envisaged that the post holder will work 10 programmed activities over 5 days. Following appointment there will be a meeting at no later than three months with the clinical manager to review and revise the job plan and objectives of the post holder. The overall split of the programmed activities is 7.5 to be devoted to direct clinical care and 2.5 to supporting professional activities. A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder and associate medical director or clinical manager three months after commencing the post and at least annually thereafter.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide psychiatric care to the Beech unit and undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • Undertake medicolegal duties as advised by the Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, including report writing and providing evidence at renewal and tribunal hearings.
  • Record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit it promptly to the Information Department.
  • Participate annually in a job plan review with the line manager and consult with relevant managers to ensure the post evolves with service changes.
  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues to ensure efficient running of services and share medical contributions to management.

Job responsibilities

  • Comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions; take an active role in financial management of the service; support the medical director and other managers in preparing service plans.
  • Provide psychiatric expertise to the forensic team.
  • Undertake assessments, report writing and participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.
  • Liaise effectively with primary care and mainstream mental health services.
  • Maintain regular clinical supervision with the consultant forensic psychiatrist; arrange and ensure bookings are made.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.

Desirable

  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Eligibility

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.

Desirable

  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.
  • Section 12/Approved clinician approval.

Knowledge & Clinical skills, Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 4 years’ full time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part‑time or flexible basis) with at least two years within a psychiatry training programme or as fixed‑term specialty trainee within psychiatry, or equivalent experience and competencies.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience within forensic psychiatry.
  • Ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent clinical skills using a biopsychosocial perspective and wide medical knowledge.

Desirable

  • Clinical experience in a range of services within Psychiatry.
  • Excellent degree of medical knowledge in relation to Learning Disability and Forensic.

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential

  • Ability to demonstrate clinical problem solving in interdisciplinary areas.
  • Possession of good organisational skills.
  • Be able to actively listen and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Holds a full valid driving licence and access to a car (unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995).
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit.
