Are you interested in working within the criminal justice system in a core role supporting the police? Do you have the empathy to work with vulnerable people? We are looking for individuals who want to make a difference working alongside the Police in custody suites, caring for detainees during their time in custody, completing forensic samples, and collaborating with other agencies to support detainee rehabilitation.

About the role

The role requires flexibility to work in your base custody suite and across an assigned region in the Police custody suites and force area. You will employ a computer and various programs competently during your working day.

After selection, you will complete a 3‑week Initial Training Course (ITC) Monday to Friday 8:00‑17:00 on full pay, followed by continued development and opportunities for progress to Senior Custody Detention Officer, where you will manage sizeable teams.

Responsibilities

  • Support detainees during their time in custody.
  • Complete forensic samples as required.
  • Work with other agencies to support and help with detainee rehabilitation.
  • Escort detainees and make recorded observations as per individual care plans.
  • Work with colleagues and Police Officers to manage detainees who may be at risk of self‑harm.

Qualifications

  • Previous Police, security or armed forces experience is beneficial.
  • Reasonable level of spoken and written English and basic numeracy.
  • Competence in IT and using a computer.
  • Full valid driving licence.
  • Right to work in the UK (lived in UK, British passport or ILR for 3 years, no gaps out of country longer than 3 months).
  • All candidates subject to police vetting checks – a clean driving and criminal record is essential.

Schedule and Pay

  • Salary to be discussed at interview.
  • Full‑time: fixed shift rotating 4 shifts on and 4 days off. 06:45‑19:00 for 2‑day shifts, followed by 18:45‑07:00 for 2 night shifts. Rota available 2 years in advance.
  • Part‑time: fixed shift rotating 2‑day shifts on, 8 days, 2 nights, 4 days off. 06:45‑19:00 for day shifts, 18:45‑07:00 for night shifts. Rota available 2 years in advance.
  • All employees, including part‑time, are required to work full shifts and some night shifts.
  • Referral bonus: £150 for each successful colleague referral.
