An exciting opportunity is now available for a Civil Design Engineer based at our offices at Tipton in the West Midlands. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and skilled engineer to help us meet the needs of our EHV construction programs.

The Engineering Design Team prepare electrical, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substations energised at up to 132,000 volts. The civil engineering discipline is a vital part of this as we have an ongoing need for new buildings, building extensions, reinforced concrete and steelwork, groundworks and much more.

We are a growing team, with a culture of support, progress and continuous improvement. We are looking for an individual who can join us in expanding and developing our outputs, who is committed to the success of the team, and is able to take ownership and personal responsibility for their workload.

As part of our hybrid working approach and in line with our policy, this role allows you to apply for a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

Main Responsibilities

  • The detailed design of civil engineering features, substation buildings, foundations, structures, roads and drainage.
  • Preparation of detailed engineering drawings in an AutoCAD environment; specifically 2D but 3D skills and other drawing editing skills may prove useful.
  • Preparation of specifications for tender and construction purposes.
  • Discharging the duties of a ‘Designer’ under the Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations.
  • Ensuring compliance of civil design output with NGED policy.

Ideal Candidate

You will ideally be qualified to a minimum of Higher National Certificate (HNC) level, or equivalent, in a relevant engineering discipline. Experience in preparing and modifying engineering drawings using computer-aided design tools is essential, with AutoCAD being the primary software used in this role.

You will be customer-focused, adaptable, and possess strong communication skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively while managing multiple design commissions simultaneously.

If you do not meet all of the listed responsibilities, we still encourage applications from candidates who can demonstrate core skills or experience within a civil or structural engineering discipline, along with AutoCAD capability.

This role may particularly suit candidates with civil site or construction experience within the utilities or major infrastructure sectors, or recent civil engineering graduates who have gained some post-study experience in a civil or structural environment.

Training and support will be provided to help you develop in the role, alongside an expectation that you take a proactive approach to your own professional development.

Applicants must hold a full UK/EU driving licence.

*Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Evidence of your stated qualifications may be required prior to appointment.
