Job overview

Perform autonomous outreach visits to newly referred spinal cord injury (SCI) patients, assess clinical needs, and ensure expert spinal injury care is shared with all referring hospitals (non‑specialist), particularly Major Trauma Centres in London. Empower spinal injury outpatients to live successfully in the community by promoting independence, self‑reliance, and participation in the surveillance and support services for patients with spinal cord injuries across the Southeast of England.

Main duties of the job

  • Work autonomously as a Specialist SCI Nurse in non‑specialist referring hospitals, community settings, and nurse‑led clinics.
  • Deliver advanced spinal outreach services for people with a new SCI who are not in a specialist SCI centre.
  • Teach and train multidisciplinary teams in hospitals and community settings to enable them to care for the SCI patient.
  • Provide clinical and psychological support, ensuring patients and families are fully informed and supported.
  • Establish clear communication lines within non‑specialist teams at MTCs, other referring hospitals, and community teams.
  • Collaborate with non‑specialist teams to increase knowledge and facilitate care, reducing avoidable complications through training and management strategies.
  • Maintain effective ongoing liaison with hospital teams and community groups.
  • Represent the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre (LSCIC) and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) at conferences and other forums.
  • Assist in coordinating admission of patients from referring hospitals or the community to the LSCIC for rehabilitation.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years Band 6 experience in spinal services.
  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) / Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Teaching and assessing qualification.
  • Diploma relevant to spinal services.
  • Experience with spinal cord injury.
  • Previous Band 7 experience.
  • Experience working autonomously and in decision‑making.
  • First‑Degree or pursuing a Master’s Degree.
  • Outpatient clinic experience.

Experience

  • Worked as a member of a multi‑professional team, preferably in an educational capacity.
  • Ability to work autonomously within a team structure.
  • Prioritise workload, handling multiple issues simultaneously.
  • Working knowledge of Clinical Governance.
  • Ventilator / respiratory / intensive care unit experience.

Knowledge

  • Ability to teach both formally (classroom) and informally (bedside) to professionals, patients and relatives.
  • Excellent practical and organisational skills.
  • Maintain privacy and dignity in all interactions.
  • Diplomatic and tactful communication with patients, relatives and staff.
  • Extensive knowledge of spinal injury and rehabilitation.
  • Demonstrated advanced leadership and interpersonal skills.

Skills

  • Strong communication skills and ability to convey sensitive information empathetically.
