Traffic Officer

Supporting the provision of a safe & secure environment across University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust sites including the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital & Louisa Martindale Building. Manage traffic flows and car parking across the Trust’s sites. Provide advice & support to Trust staff, patients & visitors regarding parking arrangements. Maximise collection of revenue from Car Parking facilities.


Main duties of the job



  • Manage traffic flow and access/egress of vehicles into Trust car parks and access roads in line with the Trust Traffic Management & Car Parking Policy.

  • Undertake cash collection and reconciliations as required.

  • Undertake daily checks and maintenance of car parking facilities & equipment including barriers, ticket & payment machines.

  • Issue enforcement notices in line with Trust policy.

  • Undertake regular foot patrols of the Hospital car parks and access roads.

  • Provide traffic support when required in emergency incidents on Trust premises.

  • Monitor relevant CCTV footage.

  • Maintain equipment, including radio communications and body‑worn camera equipment.

  • Prevent loss of property belonging to the Trust’s, their staff, patients and visitors.

  • Carry out other duties as directed by the Group Head of Security or their authorised representative.

  • Work within the policies and procedures laid down by the Trust, maintaining risk, health and safety responsibilities.


Job responsibilities



  • Deal sensitively and empathetically with individuals seeking help in parking/finding their way around the hospital site, being mindful of their reasons for attendance.

  • Communicate by telephone, intercom & face to face with staff, visitors, patients & staff from external agencies.

  • Ensure effective communication between all internal and external agencies.

  • Document all records of traffic activity or incidents comprehensively, updating and maintaining them in accordance with relevant legislation and Security Department Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Commit to improve skill levels and knowledge by participating in appropriate training and learning opportunities.

  • Carry out any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role and delegated or requested by the manager or supervisor, as the needs of the service require.

  • Complete necessary statutory, mandatory and job‑related training.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Experience



  • No qualifications required.

  • Training to be provided.

  • Basic literacy and numeracy.

  • SIA Door Supervisor License.

  • Experience of traffic management / car parking.

  • Experience using radios.


Skills



  • Understand and utilise ICT to its full potential both personally and with the Department.

  • Be aware of competing priorities of income generation from car parking facilities and sensitivities of working in a healthcare environment.

  • Able to respond to planned and unplanned activity including emergency situations.

  • Analyse information presented in various forms and make sound, reasoned judgments based on analysis.


People Management and Development



  • Demonstrate experience in communicating complex or contentious information to staff and others at all levels, both internally and externally.


Specific Requirements



  • Honesty and Integrity.

  • Full UK Manual Category B driving licence (Car).
