Lead the Plymouth Engineering Skills Centre as a visible and values-driven leader, shaping the centre’s identity, driving quality, innovation and championing an exceptional learner and staff experience. Build strong partnerships, raise the centre’s profile and ensure strong teaching, learning and operational excellence.
What the role will deliver
- Lead a values-driven culture that motivates, inspires and empowers staff and learners, modelling professional excellence and high standards of behaviour.
- Drive centre-level performance across quality, curriculum effectiveness, learner outcomes, attendance and operational standards.
- Ensure consistently high-quality teaching, learning and support, including learning walks, reviews and effective feedback.
- Build a safe, inclusive and healthy environment where wellbeing, communication and equality of opportunity are embedded in daily practice.
- Strengthen the centre’s visibility by representing it within the community and building strong relationships with schools, employers and stakeholders.
- Oversee centre facilities, ensuring rooms, workshops and shared spaces are safe, well‑utilised and aligned to learner needs.
- Manage curriculum and engineering-specific budgets, ensuring efficient deployment of resources.
- Lead staff recruitment, development, annual performance review processes and staff‑voice engagement to create a positive, high‑performing workplace.
- Promote a culture of learning, employability and wider skills for life.
Skills, knowledge and experience required
- Engineering-based qualification (ideally Level 4+) and a teaching qualification (PGCE/CertEd).
- Strong understanding of FE/HE funding streams, curriculum design and employability skills.
- Deep knowledge of current FE/HE issues, future trends, funding rules, apprenticeships, safeguarding and Prevent.
- Proven experience driving innovative quality improvements, performance management and learner‑experience enhancement.
- Outstanding leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, challenge and support teams.
- Strong networking and partnership-building skills with knowledge of local stakeholders and employer needs.
- Commitment to continuous professional development, collaboration, inclusivity and organisational values.
- Disclosure & Barring Service check: Children’s Barred List & DBS Adult’s Barred List.
This role is not suitable for flexible working due to the needs of the service.
