Consultant in Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery

Applications are invited for the replacement post of Consultant in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, at University Hospitals Tees, based at The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough. The post is intended for an individual with sub‑specialist interest in Paediatrics who will be based at James Cook and will include outreach sessions at the key peripheral sites.

Applicants should possess full GMC registration, FRCS (or equivalent) and either already be on the Specialist Register or be within approximately 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview.

The successful candidate will be appointed under the current terms and conditions of service for NHS Consultants. Full consideration will be given to applicants who wish to apply for a reduced/part time contract.

Main duties of the job

This post provides an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual to join the existing team of ENT Consultants whilst delivering a sub‑specialist interest in all aspects of Paediatrics. The successful candidate will link into a progressive and enthusiastic multi‑professional team based at James Cook which provides comprehensive ENT services to the population of Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire.

The department comprises a fully established complete subspecialised Otorhinolaryngology service. This includes Rhinology (with anterior skull base surgery), Otology (with lateral skull base surgery), Head and Neck surgery, the sub‑regional Head and Neck oncology centre and Paediatric ENT. The department hosts the North East Cochlear Implant service. Other specialist services in the department include adult voice, paediatric voice, airway and swallow, balance disorders, tertiary audiology and a comprehensive head & neck dystonia service, offering botulinum toxin treatment. We have a paediatric surgical ward and a level 2b paediatric critical care unit. We also have a dedicated paediatric emergency department and decision unit, medical paediatric ward and a large neonatal unit.

The ENT department is centrally based within a modern purpose‑built facility in the James Cook University Hospital, with a peripheral service network across the region. The Trust is one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England. The Paediatric ENT Team, led by Miss Kate Blackmore, enjoys a close and collaborative working relationship with the Paediatric and Neonatal departments, all based at James Cook.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Evidence of completion of formal training programme in ENT
  • Training and experience in Paediatric airway surgery
  • Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of interview
  • Training in laser surgery
  • Qualifications in other specialist skill
  • Educational Supervisor Training

Clinical Experience

  • Clinical experience equivalent to completion of a formal training program in specialist Paediatric ENT
  • Experience of leading improvement programmes, implementing change and monitoring compliance
  • Broad experience in General ENT
  • Evidence of teaching and training resident medical staff and undergraduate students
  • Evidence of working in a multi‑disciplinary team
  • Evidence of research
  • Evidence of any additional training or fellowship in Paediatric ENT
  • Evidence of innovative service developments
