Locum Consultant Stroke Medicine

The Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUH) is seeking a full‑time, 12‑month fixed‑term Stroke Consultant Physician to join an existing team of 10 NHS and academic consultants. NUH is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre for the East Midlands, providing 24/7 thrombolysis, endovascular rescue, and hyper‑acute care.
The successful applicant will help develop the stroke pathway and provide consultant input across hyper‑acute stroke, acute stroke, intensive rehabilitation, and continuing stroke rehabilitation.
Main duties
- 16‑bed hyper‑acute stroke unit at QMC campus
- 34‑bed acute rehabilitation stroke unit at QMC campus
- 18‑bed long‑term rehabilitation stroke unit at City campus and 6 beds in Connect House (further rehab beds)
- A 7‑day Fast‑Track TIA clinic
- 24/7 thrombolysis service supported by telemedicine
- A regional mechanical thrombectomy service
- Regional neurosurgical service provision
Job responsibilities
The post is a full‑time (10 Programmed Activities) Fixed‑Term Consultant Stroke Physician role, covering all aspects of the stroke service, including 24/7 coverage, clinical care, multidisciplinary meetings, and supporting professional activities such as medical education, audit, and research.
Person Specification
Teaching, Audit & Research
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
- Ability to teach and support junior staff effectively
- Original research publications
- Higher teaching degree or qualification or training
Professional registration
- Full GMC registration with Licence to Practice
Professional qualifications
- MBBS
- Full MRCP
- Higher professional degree
Clinical skills/experience
- Extensive experience in stroke medicine
- Experience in hyper‑acute stroke care and trained in thrombolysis
- Comprehensive knowledge of current issues in general internal medicine
- Specific training in communication skills
- Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
Management skills
- Proven leadership skills, able to lead a team effectively
- Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
- Experience of change management
- Higher management degree or qualification or training
