An exciting opportunity for an experienced Specialist Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to join the Hand Therapy team at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The role involves assessment and treatment of plastic and orthopaedic hand trauma and post‑operative patients in practitioner‑led hand clinics, assisting in consultant clinics, overseeing hand rehabilitation and inpatient plastic hand therapy services, and contributing to line management and service implementation across the Trust.

Key responsibilities include leadership of the hand therapy team, supervision and teaching, clinical education of other healthcare professionals, advanced splinting, interpretation of radiographic imaging, complex clinical reasoning, removal of K‑wires and wound care management, and compliance with local and national policies and procedures.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Grad Dip Phys/BSc (Physiotherapy) or Grad Dip OT/BSc (Occupational Therapy)
  • State Registered on HCPC Register
  • Post registration qualification/experience in hand therapy
  • Evidence of postgraduate work/advanced course attendance in hand therapy (e.g. BAHT accredited or equivalent)
  • Desire to undertake further study

Experience

  • Experience at senior level in hand therapy
  • Active participation in the audit process
  • Experience of independent assessment and teaching in this clinical area
  • Membership of British Association of Hand Therapists
  • Completion of BAHT Level II: Radiographic Imaging of the Hand

Skills

  • Highly specialised skills in hand therapy assessment and treatment including splinting requiring a high level of manual dexterity
  • Able to work autonomously and under pressure
  • Effective communicator with colleagues and a diverse range of patients and carers
  • Able to teach effectively and present information to multi‑professional groups
  • Able to assess post‑surgical hand trauma patients and be competent in care planning (including tendon, nerve, fracture and extensive hand/forearm trauma)
  • Excellent and proven leadership skills
  • Advanced clinical reasoning/analytical skills
  • Evidence of CPD and the ability to influence change in practice
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge

  • Excellent knowledge of hand therapy
  • Awareness of the political/national situation
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and its implications to practice
  • Good insight into national policies or standards for hand therapy

Other

  • Able to travel cross‑site
  • Flexible to meet service delivery needs
