Specialist Nurse Practitioner ADHD Non Medical Prescriber

South Manchester CAMHS is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced practitioner to take on a developmental role to become the ADHD Clinical Lead to develop and deliver the ADHD assessment and intervention pathways.

The successful candidate will be a registered professional and have a proven ability to provide assessment of ADHD and interventions to young people and parents/carers with ADHD and mental health difficulties.

They will be expected to deliver consultation and advice to the multi-disciplinary team as well as other professionals and agencies involved in the care plan.

The post holder will be willing to complete the training to become a Non‑Medical Prescriber and the expectation is that the post holder achieves the level of AfC 8a in 12-18 months.

Main duties of the job

  • Lead on the development of the ADHD pathway and ADHD practitioners, working closely with senior leadership team.
  • Plan and undertake specialist CAMHS assessments which identify the needs of children and young people with ADHD and their families.
  • Carry out and monitor clinically effective treatment programmes and therapies, including the independent and supplementary prescribing of medications for ADHD as required with consent from young people and families, stopping treatment in accordance with national and local policies and guidelines or individual’s clinical condition and understanding the potential for unwanted side effects including adverse drug reactions, interactions and contraindications.
  • Practice in a manner that is clinically autonomous from assessment through to diagnosis and long‑term management of children and young people with ADHD, including writing prescriptions for controlled drugs and other medications where appropriate.
  • Manage the ADHD waiting list for the service.
  • Provide consultation and training to other members of staff.
  • Hold a caseload to maintain registration and provide high level assessment and intervention in line with the post’s seniority and expected level of experience and skill.
  • Working within professional guidelines and exercise responsibility for the systematic supervision of CAMHS practice within the service.
  • Utilizing research skills for audit, policy and service development and research.

Registration

  • You must be registered/accredited with professional body: NMC/|GMC

Qualifications

  • Recognised qualification in: Registered Nursing: Registered Nurse in Mental Health (RMN/RNMH), Registered Nurse for Sick Children (RSCN) or equivalent
  • Independent and Supplementary Non‑Medical Prescribing
  • Certificate in supervision skills or equivalent
  • Postgraduate training in psychological therapies and interventions

Experience

  • Minimum 1 year post qualification experience of working with children and young people
  • Proven experience of working effectively with people with mental health difficulties, including autonomous management of a complex caseload which frequently deals with distressing and emotional circumstances
  • Proven experience of working effectively with children and young people with a full range of mental health difficulties providing both assessment and therapeutic interventions across settings including community, outpatient and clinics
  • Extensive experience of assessing and managing risk: including safeguarding
  • Experience of working autonomously as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience of liaison and consulting with a range of healthcare and other relevant agencies and professionals.
  • Experience in designing, planning and undertaking clinical research/service evaluation.
  • Post qualification experience of Non‑medical prescribing
  • Experience of policy and/or service development
  • Community mental health experience across a variety of settings
  • Experience of using computer based assessment applications such as QbTest.
  • Experience of leading service audit and/or research programmes
  • Formal training in clinical supervision

Knowledge and Skills

  • Up to date knowledge of child mental health and relevant legislation
  • Ability to carry out and monitor effect ADHD assessments, treatments and therapies including understanding of potential unwanted side effects from medication
  • The ability to assess, formulate and manage care appropriately, ensuring discharge is timely
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information and overcome barriers to acceptance
  • To be able to function as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and to liaise effectively with other agencies i.e., education, GP’s, maintaining positive working relationships
  • To be able to provide feedback and constructive guidance to junior members of the team and trainees to facilitate their personal and professional development
  • Ability to manage own caseload and act as lead practitioner; to work independently with the support of clinical and management supervision
  • Ability to manage and organise own time and diary, and work flexibly and creatively in a clinical context
  • Understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance and a willingness to follow Trust Policy and Procedures
  • Delivery of evidence-based practice and the ability to demonstrate how this influences clinical practice
  • IT competence including the ability to maintain clinical records both written and electronic.
  • Ability to integrate CAMHS theories and outcome data with clinical practice and service provision. Ability to use assessment tools and outcome measures collaboratively.
  • Ability to reflect on and critically appraise the performance of self and others.
  • Ability to follow policy and make proposals for change.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Advanced IT skills
