Job Summary
The MRI Technologist is responsible for daily modality operations, performing Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) according to established protocols. This role works closely under the direction of the Radiologist and other physicians, contributes to training and onboarding of new employees, and assists in the supervision of MRI students.
Essential Functions
- Completes assigned tasks within appropriate time frame and demonstrates flexibility for workload fluctuations.
- Selects and operates the magnetic resonance system, surface coils, physiologic gating devices, and associated equipment to achieve desired results.
- Applies principles of magnetic resonance safety to minimize risk to patient, self, and others.
- Properly positions patient on the MRI scanning cradle, inputs patient information, and selects scan parameters for specific exams; performs IV injections; administers magnetic contrast agents; manipulates images using computer functions; performs quality assurance tests; and demonstrates required clinical competency.
- Demonstrates direct patient care by evaluating the patient, verifying patient ID, and related information; explains procedures and obtains consent; screens patients for metal safety; ensures comfort, privacy, safety; monitors patient and equipment; troubleshoots equipment during malfunctions.
- Participates in education and training of students and orientation of new staff.
- Participates in performance improvement projects and assists department in audits.
- Selects appropriate pulse sequences based on protocols and data acquisition parameters.
- Maintains controlled access to the magnet room and Zones 2,3,4.
- Performs QC duties and maintains maintenance of quality control.
- Works closely with other modalities and departments.
- Oversees quality control duties and maintenance of quality control.
Education
- Associate’s degree from an ARRT-accredited institute (preferred).
Licensing & Certifications
- MRI Registry from an accredited organization (ARRT) or American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) – required.
- State Licensure – preferred unless required by the hiring state.
- BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association – required at hire for Roper St Francis locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH.
- Alternate certifications: Certification and registration with ARRT in Diagnostic Radiology (required); Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS); Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMTCB); Advanced MRI Registry (MR) – preferred or must be obtained within two years.
Experience
- 1 year of experience in an MRI department in a hospital setting (preferred).

- EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) – preferred.
