Neonatal Sister/Charge Nurse

We are seeking an experienced Neonatal Nurse to progress their career as a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse. You will support the Senior Sister and develop our Special Care Neonatal Unit and Transitional Care services at James Paget Hospital. The role requires excellent IT skills and a good understanding of the BadgerNet system to monitor compliance with the National Neonatal Audit Programme (NNAP) and other data collection needs. You will be highly motivated, well organised, flexible and able to influence practice, deliver high quality care and help us achieve Bliss and Baby Friendly accreditations.
Key responsibilities include demonstrating excellent clinical outcomes, delivering safe and effective care for neonates and families, improving early care experience, linking with Paediatric services, implementing Trust policies, acting promptly on concerns, and communicating effectively within a multi‑agency context.
Main duties of the job
- Confidently and competently lead nursing care for sick neonates.
- Exercise leadership within the unit in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse, attend meetings and act as delegated.
- Supervise the professional work of nursing staff and monitor participation in staff appraisals.
- Monitor and support compliance with the neonatal national audit programme.
- Create the correct environmental atmosphere for baby care.
- Improve service delivery to parents and monitor their satisfaction and needs.
- Coordinate off‑duty to provide adequate skill mix and take action when shortfalls occur; promote divisional policy on leave, sickness and e‑roster.
- Assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with organisational responsibilities, mandatory training and record keeping.
- Maintain safe custody of drugs and ensure legal requirements and hospital rules for administration are observed.
- Ensure equipment is in safe working order and document accordingly.
- Enforce the uniform policy.
- Ensure documentation is completed clearly and concisely in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines.
- Participate in and promote the Bliss Accreditation and UNICEF Baby Friendly Accreditation achievements.
Qualifications
- Neonatal QIS with a minimum of 2 years post‑qualification experience.
- Registered NMC Nurse or Midwife.
Knowledge and Experience
- Evidence of knowledge of key neonatal recommendations and issues.
- Evidence of QI or change work in previous roles.
