Occupational Health Nurse Advisor

Do you enjoy the challenge of working in a busy service where no two days are the same? This is an excellent opportunity for a highly motivated, experienced, enthusiastic Occupational Health Nurse to join our nurse‑led SEQOHS accredited friendly team at the Trust. The post is based at the Working Well Centre, Worcester, but will also involve cross‑site working, travel to some outside NHS sites and companies for whom we provide an Occupational Health and Wellbeing service.
We are looking for an occupational health nurse with at least 12 months Occupational Health experience in the NHS or private sector. You must possess excellent interpersonal and teamworking skills, be flexible, responsive and dynamic with motivation and commitment to continuous learning and development. We seek self‑motivated individuals with excellent organisational skills who can prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality.
You will be an integral part of a multi‑disciplinary team, delivering proactive services while adhering to national guidelines to ensure the wellbeing of all staff. We have full and part‑time positions available.
Main duties of the job
To support and contribute to the effective provision of a high‑quality Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service to the Trust and other public sector and private organisations.
- Promote and maintain a systematic, holistic approach to occupational health and wellbeing provision, its implementation and evaluation.
- Provide clear impartial advice to managers and employees to optimise health and wellbeing at work, supporting the reduction in sickness absence and preventing work‑related ill health and injury.
- Participate in identifying and maintaining a safe working environment and preventing ill health that may be associated with work.
- Promote and implement workplace health and wellbeing initiatives.
- Work with private organisations and deliver a high‑quality Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service within agreed service level specifications.
- Contribute to an atmosphere conducive to learning, audit, and the use of nursing‑based research / evidence‑based rationale for clinical practice.
- Use Cority Occupational Health software which supports all clinical functions.

Accountable to: Head of OH and Wellbeing Services
Reports to: Deputy Occupational Health Nurse Manager
Key Working Relationships: All stakeholders, other NHS Occupational Health and Wellbeing Services, other non‑NHS organisations, Clinical Commissioning Groups.
Risk Assessment: Working with VDUs, some manual handling/repetitive tasks. Potential exposure to distressed and verbally aggressive individuals. The role can be emotionally challenging at times.
Job Purpose

Key Duties
- Work autonomously and independently, seeking support where necessary for more complex issues.
- Undertake assessments and provide health‑at‑work advice following a referral, informing managers within the defined departmental timescales and in line with confidentiality and consent requirements.
- Provide effective case management, assessing employee fitness for work following long‑term sickness absence, frequent short‑term sickness absence, or where the employee is experiencing health or disability issues impacting their work.
- Offer advice on fitness for work, return‑to‑work plans, workplace adjustments and ill‑health retirement.
- Deliver immunisations and vaccination clinics, including venepuncture and administration.
- Use agreed Occupational Health procedures and guidance to conduct a risk assessment for staff with blood or body‑fluid exposure incidents, advising on appropriate treatment and informing staff of the source/recipient blood results.
- Give Infection Prevention and Control advice, including contact tracing after staff exposure to infectious conditions.
- Work in partnership with clients to identify health hazards through the risk assessment process and support implementation of health surveillance programmes where appropriate.
- Act as Duty Nurse Adviser, providing telephone advice on any Occupational Health concern, including pre‑placement health issues, health capability to work, infection control and blood and body‑fluid exposure incidents, and advise on more complex issues as required.
- Participate in Health and Wellbeing initiatives.
- Support the health surveillance function of the department.
- Participate in the induction and training of new employees.
- Record accurate and confidential occupational health information into staff records after appointments and communication.
Communication and Relationship Skills
Work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team where each member makes an essential professional contribution to the delivery of the occupational health service. Develop good working relationships with key stakeholders. Communicate sensitive and highly sensitive confidential information regarding patients/clients with empathy, persuasion, and reassurance. Establish and maintain effective communication channels with all colleagues, managers and other professionals. Support the Head of OH in the provision of a nurse‑led OH service.
Planning and Organisational Skills
Manage time effectively when handling cases and clinics. Analytical and judgement skills.
Client Care
Prompt production of reports to support clients and managers.

Personal Qualities
- Ability to energise and engage self and others.

Qualifications
- Registered Nurse on the NMC register.
- Evidence of relevant professional development.
- Post‑basic qualification at either diploma or degree level in Occupational Health or relevant experience.
- Relevant teaching qualification.
Experience
- Substantial Occupational Health experience.
- Supervision of junior staff.
- Experience of coordinating clinics and service requirements.
- NHS Occupational Health experience.
Skills / Knowledge
- Up to date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues including NHS, DH, HSE legislation.
- Ability to assess clients presenting to Occupational Health, plan and provide specialist advice tailored to their health needs and work‑related issues.
- Experience of undertaking audit or nursing research.
- Supervisory experience of junior members of a team.
- Knowledge of the health and wellbeing agenda.
- Ability to decide how best to achieve expected results while acting within clearly defined policies, procedures and codes of conduct.
- Willingness to travel and work across site as required.
- Ability to carry out CPR.
- Excellent IT skills: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
