Qualified/Trainee Paediatric Advanced Clinical Practitioner

The Advanced Practitioner role in paediatrics supports the assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing management of children and young people across acute paediatric pathways. The post holder will practise autonomously within their scope of competence, working collaboratively with medical, nursing, and allied health professionals to support safe, effective, and timely care.

Priority will be given to experienced and qualified Advanced Practitioners with relevant paediatric experience. Where there are insufficient suitably qualified applicants, applications from practitioners seeking a trainee advanced practitioner role will be considered. Trainee applicants must be able to demonstrate extensive clinical experience in paediatrics. Any trainee appointment would be made at Band 7, with appropriate training, educational supervision and clinical support in place.

This post is suited to clinicians committed to maintaining high standards of paediatric care and contributing to the development of paediatrics and advanced practice within the UHP.

Main duties of the job

  • Work in accordance with the Multi‑professional Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice in England (HEE, 2017) and University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) Trust Policy for Advanced Practice
  • Utilise advanced clinical skills to ensure that patients within Paediatrics receive holistic, timely and high‑quality care
  • Exercise clinical expertise, high levels of judgement, discretion, and decision‑making in care, in accordance with their scope of practice
  • Draw on expertise utilising the four pillars of advanced practice to lead and influence improvements to standards of care
  • Develop a culture of organisational learning to inspire future and existing staff
  • Influence and lead on the improvement of care through clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and research in collaboration with clinical and academic colleagues
  • Demonstrate compassionate leadership in daily working
  • Facilitate multidisciplinary education for all members of the Paediatric team
  • Attend Paediatric medical emergencies and cardiac arrest calls in all areas of the hospital

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and ‘At Risk’ status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

Qualifications

  • Statutory Professional Registration
  • Significant contribution to a Portfolio of Evidence
  • Independent non‑medical prescribing, if from a core profession in which NMP is supported
  • Masters Degree in Advanced Practice or equivalent (as defined by Trust AP policy)
  • Advanced Paediatric Life Support provider
  • Instructor on life support courses
  • Leadership course

Knowledge and Experience

  • Extensive, recent demonstrable experience within clinical Paediatric practice.
  • Management ability and leadership demonstrable experience
  • Excellent clinical and practical skills with infants, children and young people
  • Demonstrable experience of education and supervision
  • Recent demonstrable experience in clinical audit and quality improvement
  • Influencing policy and clinical guidance
  • Proven evidence of practice in line with the HEE (2017) multi‑professional framework
  • Multi‑professional supervision
  • Implementing policy and clinical guidance
  • Extensive demonstrable experience in a multitude of Paediatric settings such as Assessment unit/ward/community/ED/outpatient

  • Ability to recognise and analyse complex situations and take appropriate action.
  • Proven evidence of relevant, recent study and continuing professional development
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in written and verbal form
  • Flexible and responsive to changing environments
  • Demonstrates understanding and incorporates customer care
  • Ability to work with complex and diverse health informatics systems
  • Ability to manage own case load working to priorities and deadlines
