We are recruiting for an experienced Controls Engineer to join a growing engineering business delivering bespoke special purpose machinery projects across a range of advanced manufacturing and industrial sectors.
This is an excellent opportunity for a Controls Engineer with strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC experience who enjoys working on full lifecycle automation projects — from concept and design through to commissioning and customer handover.
The Role
As a Controls Engineer, you will play a key role in the development of automated machinery and turnkey systems for high-profile industrial clients. You will be involved in both office-based design work and onsite commissioning activities across the UK and occasionally internationally.
Key Responsibilities
- PLC software development using Siemens TIA Portal and/or Beckhoff TwinCAT
- HMI and SCADA development
- Electrical controls design and system architecture
- Full project lifecycle involvement from concept through to FAT/SAT
- Machine commissioning, testing and troubleshooting
- Integration of motion control, servo drives, robotics and safety systems
- Supporting continuous improvement and innovation across machinery projects
- Working closely with mechanical, electrical and project engineering teams
- Producing technical documentation and customer support materials
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer or PLC Engineer
- Strong Siemens and/or Beckhoff PLC programming experience
- Experience working on special purpose machinery, automated production lines or bespoke machinery projects
- Knowledge of motion control, drives, sensors and industrial communication protocols
- Ability to read and understand electrical schematics
- Experience commissioning automated systems onsite
- Strong problem-solving and fault-finding skills
- Full UK driving licence
- Beckhoff TwinCAT 3
- Servo motion control systems
- Safety PLCs and machine safety standards
- Industrial networking (Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP)
