Job Title: Glaucoma Consultant

Start Date: October 2026 or ASAP

Contract Type: Permanent

Main Duties

We are seeking a Consultant Ophthalmologist with expertise or a strong interest in glaucoma to join our friendly, supportive, forward‑thinking Eye Unit. The role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patient care by delivering high‑quality, specialist glaucoma services within a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert care in the management of complex glaucoma cases.
  • Undertake glaucoma clinics and surgical activity, including conventional surgery and MIGS.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of the glaucoma service.
  • Participate in teaching and training of resident doctors, nurses, optometrists and wider staff.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of advancements in glaucoma care and surgical practice.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • FRCOphth or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • Experience of teaching and audit.
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement.
  • Experience in glaucoma clinics.
  • Experience in performing glaucoma surgery.
  • Publications in ophthalmology.
  • MD or PhD.
  • CCT (or equivalent) or within 3 months of completion of CCT.
  • Clinical trials experience.
  • Publication in high‑impact journals.
  • Experience of running virtual glaucoma clinics.

Aptitudes and Skills

  • Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
  • Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Ability to complete audit.
  • Ability to be flexible.
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly.
  • Ability to travel independently between hospital sites or for necessary patient visits/on‑call.
